Summer Spanish Immersion

Hello fellow CCers,

It's a little early in the school year for summer programs, but I guess it can never be too early on college confidential.

I am looking for a summer spanish Immersion program with a reputable organization. I am in spanish III honors this year and I hope to use this summer as a chance to significantly improve my language.

any suggestions? personal experiences?

Talk to Middlebury. They have an immersion camp for middle and high school . See comments on a summer program thread about Chinese. They do Spanish, though.

Middlebury offers four-week language immersion programs in the summer through the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy. They have a Spanish immersion program as well as programs in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and French for middle and high school students.

(Full disclosure: I work at Middlebury College)

doing a 4-week program with Concordia Language Villages El Lago del Bosque (there are several locations but Bemidji MN is the prettiest) would significanly improve your Spanish.

Can anyone reccomend a summer immersion program for high schoolers that is held in a latin american country?

check out putney student travel and AFS summer student exchange -- both programs have excellent reputations.

Search prior threads. I did a write up on High school Summer Spanish immersion

My daughter spent 4 weeks in Nicaragua and loved it. I don't want to repeat all the information I already put into other threads, but it was a superb experience.

I went to an EXCELLENT, inexpensive program in Mexico.

Learn Spanish in Mexico - San Miguel de Allende - Academia Hispano Americana

My Spanish improved by leaps and bounds and I highly recommend the program. PM me if you have any questions... I could talk for hours about it! =)

new to this sight not sure how to start a new thread but looking for spanish emersion programs for next summer (starting HS next year)

I went to El Lago del Bosque at Marine on St. Croix (Wilder) for two weeks, and my opinion was simply meh. I think that the 4-week program for credit (cr

Re: Concordia Language Villages

The two week programs are good but not highly educational. The four week programs have homework. The college credit programs are great.

Look into Middlebury programs.

My daughter attended a terrific Spanish immersion program a couple of years ago in the mountains of Guatemala, called Casa Xelaju. She lived with a local family, and during her stay did did some volunteer work at a local orphanage and school run by the language school-- I gather that, in fact, the language school is a way of making money for this enterprise, which benefits local children. My D attended with a group from her school (she was only 13, and I would not have let her travel there by herself at that age.) But she said that older kids and adults came on their own for varying amounts of time, and often for repeated summers. I’ve thought seriously about doing it myself, perhaps going with my D . . .

How many weeks did she go; how much spanish did she pick up;do the kids all work at speaking spanish to each other?
thanks

My daughter went for three weeks. After she came back, she took a test given by the school district, and did well enough to be given the option of skipping the next year of high school Spanish. She did not feel comfortable doing that–the Casa Xelaju curriculum doesn’t cover things exactly as they do in her home school. But her Spanish was certainly much improved, especially her listening comprehension.

Talking to parents, I gathered that some kids in her group worked harder, and learned a lot more than others. Even those parents whose kids were not very serious about their Spanish did think the program was worthwhile as a culturally enriching experience.

My S (college freshman) is looking for a spanish language immersion program in spain - hopefully with some college credits to be had! suggestions?

Following up on Virginia’s comment, I have worked on-site at the Middlebury high school academies and would just add that 1) you can earn credit through this program and 2) the campuses where this program is located are amazing. check out pomona.edu, for example. Also the immersion expertise that Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy brings from its traditional adult language school is beneficial to students at all levels. 3) There is now a Day Academy available in the north east. Check out [Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy | Language immersion program on college campuses](http://mmla.middlebury.edu) and [Summer Day Academy | Language immersion for middle and high school students](http://mmla.middlebury.edu/summerday) for details on these three points.

I am our Social Networking Manager for Rustic Pathways, and if you’re looking for something in Latin America, we have great programs in Costa Rica that are based in immersion and include living with Costa Rican families ([Spanish Language Immersion in Costa Rica, Learn Spanish in Costa Rica](http://www.rusticpathways.com/costarica/spanishlanguageimmersion.php)). It’s a wonderful program that incorporates classroom instruction as well as adventure activities in the afternoons.

Our programs are also designed to interconnect with each other, so you can do anything from 2-8 weeks of language immersion, and then follow it up with a Community Service or adventure program working with locals and practicing your language skills out in the field. Always feel free to email me with any questions or if you’d like any parent references from our programs! Connor@rusticpathways.com

Anyone know of any summer Spanish immersion programs, appropriate for high schoolers, in Texas or nearby states?

Why would you take half of the fun of speaking a language? I am not a fan of language programs/camps based in the US. Plenty of safe destinations with solid supervision on location. I know of a couple of programs on which teachers are working during the summer. Everything is well organized/supervised. Nothing will replace the real thing. Have a good day!
