summer stock audition info

Susan,

I was not actually inquiring about casting DECISIONS yet - while some casting has been done, many theaters will not be making final decisions for another week or two at least. And while I know that we are all interested in who will be working where, I was "fishing" for info about the EXPERIENCE of the auditions themselves for the benefit of those who will go next year - were they well run? were auditioners made to feel comfortable, what were auditioners asked to do, etc., etc. I know that information that was shared by people who knew my D last year BEFORE she went to auditions was most helpful.

PS wanted to share that the male, MT freshman friend of your D's who has already been offered work by the MUNY is a UM wolverine. GO BLUE!!!

Theatermom, I understand. I will share about all that too. In order to share that, it is interwined with callbacks, offers, etc. I think the sharing of the EXPERIENCE and process is important too and am happy to share it all as things settle.

You are right that some theaters notify this week or later but some make offers on the spot at the callbacks right at StrawHat or at NETC, etc.

It would be more helpful and effective to share it as a whole, rather than step by step when the process is not complete. Since others have a year to go yet, another week or so won't change things.

Many HS seniors and parents on here are waiting until all college decisions are rendered before posting and several summer stock candidates' parents are also doing the same. I think our kids would prefer that.

Susan,

I repeat, I am certainly NOT trying to press you or anyone in any way. And as for your last comment:

"Many HS seniors and parents on here are waiting until all college decisions are rendered before posting and several summer stock candidates' parents are also doing the same. I think our kids would prefer that."

you have every reason to know that I completely share this sentiment.

Yes, no problem whatsoever. I was just responding that I was willing to share in due time and when you had clarified that even if we were not ready to share decisions, folks are interested in the actual process and reports of those experiences, I was explaining that I agree but it is tied together and so I was waiting on that a bit longer as well. I wasn't sure if you wanted us to share the auditions now even if not sharing the decisions and I was just trying to respond and not ignore that request and mention that I wanted to wait on it all, as I think others seem to also be doing. But I will share it soon and I'll be happy when it is settled!

Whenever anyone feels like sharing, it will be appreciated.

My daughter auditioned for Seaside Music Theater. Auditionees were asked to sing 32 bars each of 2 contrasting songs and have a one minute comedic monologue prepared. Some auditionees were asked if they had a "rock" song as "Jesus Christ Superstar" is one of their summer productions this year. (The comapny manager later said they were surprised at how many auditionees did not have a rock song in their repetoire).
There was a dance callback later in the day where a tap and jazz combination was taught. There was also a separate dance call for dancers only.
Seaside held auditions in New York City, Daytona Beach and at the SETC convention.
My daughter just found out she has been cast in "Superstar", "A Little Night Music", and "Singing in the Rain".
She is thrilled....it is a wonderful company!

Congratulations to your D St8gemom! As I recall, your D is still in high school, yes? Did she audition through SETC's? Did she (does she) have to be 18 to audition (work) at this venue? Can you tell us any more about Seaside Music Theater? I'm sure these are questions that other parents and students might have as they contemplate future summer stock auditions. Any specifics you could share would be most helpful.

I'm sure it will be a lot of fun and summer stock can be a great learning experience as well. Good for her!

theatermom -

Thank you! Yes, my daughter is still in high school (she's currently 15-a sophomore). While most of the actors working at Seaside are college age or older, they do hire a few "locals". Her first job with them was two years ago in "Annie". Both of my daughters were in that production, and the Annie was a local girl (equity) who had been on Broadway.
Seaside is a wonderful and very well respected company. They use a full orchestra for all of their productions. Many of the cast members have gone on to Broadway as well as Broadway performers have come back to Seaside. Many of the directors are very well known in the "industry" and the chance to work with them is priceless. You learn so much.
Seaside has an apprentice program for college students where housing is provided and daily classes are mandatory. You also receive a weekly salary while being an apprentice and usually perform in at least 2-3 shows during the summer season.
As you can probably tell, I LOVE this company. The opportunity my daughter has been given is amazing. I would recommend auditioning for them to everyone who would like to be in Florida for the summer!!
Here's a link to their website:

So your daughter will be part of the regular ensemble for these three shows(non-Equity, I'm thinking?) - not the apprentice program - at age 15? That's amazing!! And because you live near by housing isn't an issue.... How great an opportunity for her - and for you because you don't have to travel far to see her!! And how nice that the theater seems to commit to using some local talent.

Congrats again and thanks for sharing!

She's non-equity. Last year she was Etcetera in CATS and ensemble in Beauty and the Beast. This season she'll be ensemble in Jesus Christ Superstar and Singing in the Rain and Frederika in A Little Night Music.
And you're right....housing isn't an issue, although she has spent many nights staying in the apartments with the apprentices after a late rehearsal or show......and loving that! They also let her attend all of the apprentice classes, it's just not mandatory for her.
You're right....since I don't have to travel, I get to see soooooo many shows!
They grow up so fast, so I try to see as many as I can while they're here!

St8gemom...having "known" you over the years online outside of CC, and following your D's as they grow up in theater (and otherwise), I want to send my hearty congrats to your daughter on this casting news!!! It is a terrific opportunity for someone her age. Being ensemble in those level shows will be an incredible experience and also playing Frederika! It is fortunate that you have a theater of this quality in your area and of course that your D's talents are such that she is able to do shows there. Seaside is well known and well respected outside of your area.

By the way, Seaside is not the only summer stock theater that hires some Equity, some NonEquity, and some local talent. I know of many summer stock theaters that have this combination. They hold equity auditions for the Equity slots, nonEquity open calls and/or StrawHats for the nonEquity slots, and then local auditions for some local talent slots. For the nonEquity actors, and for the local talent, it is a wonderful opportunity to learn and be a part of the professional performance experience along with the Equity actors.

Susan

Soozie-
What are some of these other theatres you mention?

Believersmom.....I know I have read this combination at various theaters' sites and/or audition notices and so can't remember them all without searching around again. Here are a few off the top of my head that have Equity actors, nonEquity Actors, and some local auditions/actors....Surflight Theatre, Seaside, St. Michael's Playhouse, Forestburgh Playhouse, Merry-go-Round Playhouse, Weston Playhouse, Maine State Music Theater, and I think Cape Playhouse ....I'd have to look up others and don't have the time at the moment.

New Harmony Theater has Equity Auditions/slots and NonEquity auditions/slots but am unsure on local talent.

These are just examples, not an entire list.

Great thank you!

does muny call everyone who auditioned? I'm assuming not...

Hi collegeboundkorean!

I remember you from last summer! I don't remember where you are in the high school/college process, but as I remember you were going to be in Jesus Christ Superstar along with the MUNY teens, yes? Hope all is going well for you.

The MUNY only calls those performers to whom they are offering contracts for the summer and it is my understanding that all the initial calls have been made. BUT.......they do give performers some time to respond to the offers so I would imagine if any of the performers originally called do not accept their offers, others MAY be called.

Hope this helps!

allrighty, yes I auditioned and made the call-backs which was amazing b/c i'm only a senior in high school... I have no aspiration to pursue MT in college, but still I've been working with the Muny since i was 5 and I was hoping to do the Muny this summer for $$ haha, but anyways, I'm in Aida regardless!

Just a brief report re: Strawhat. Others with more loquacious reporters will have to fill in the gaps. My s was at the audition site from 1PM 'till 10:30PM. He noted that he was pretty much busy the entire time. He performed a song (30sec) and a monologue that he had used before, but had edited it to approx. 30 sec. He said that he "blanked out" part way through (a result of his recent edit, no doubt), came to his senses and completed it. Despite that, he received 8 or so callbacks, some for the same day, the last of which he just completed (1+ week later). He was apparently able to schedule these callbacks around his classes. One theater, only looking for ensemble, only attended the dance audition (jazz and tap, I believe.) So far, s has received one offer (for one play) from a theater not at Strawhat, but auditioning over the same weekend. He has heard that he is one of 10 guys (5 taller, 5 shorter) under consideration for 5 roles. Whether or not he gets an offer depends on whether they cast tall or short (he's 6'1"). Not sure when/if other offers might come. I'll post when I learn more. I think he enjoyed the process, found everyone to be really nice. He only knew of one other person who had received an audition time, but on his audition day, ran into about 20 or so people he knew.

is there a wasy someone could post websites to all the summer stock info they have. Being as I will be attending Tisch/CAP in the fall, I am already looking into summer stock info for next summer. I guess I like to plan early. But if anyone could post info like the summer program thread. I am new to all this summer stock and really confused. Thanks to anyone who can do this and help a poor, pitiful, confused soon to be MT student. haha.
