Another suggestion would be to watch Playbill.com' s audition postings for "open" audition calls for so-called "Summer Stock" theaters. My D just got cast for a production of Crazy for You in Lancaster, PA. after attending open calls in NYC. They also held local auditions in Lancaster. She happens to attend college in NYC (NOT for musical theater, but she is a dancer and sings, so she was looking for a summer job), so she is able to look out for audition opportunities and goes when she can...they also post auditions for other cities than NYC at that site...

She was also cast in a similar fashion last year in Theatre of the Stars' production of Music Man which ran at Houston's Theatre Under the Stars as well as Atlanta's Fox Theatre.

hello again, so yes I did= not make equity this year at muny, however, it has been a trend taht kids that are 18 do not typically get cast for equity , especially locals. This is because they will do it for free anyway, so they wouldn't have to pay me to do Aida! I'm' pretty sure thsi is true because the daughter of thsi very-important choreographer/director of a program didn't make it straight out of high school. She got in this year, so there's hope fro next year!

I'm sorry that there is so much negativity flying around the forum this afternoon. I wish I knew why it is so prevalent this year because in years past it was almost NEVER like this. Even though April brought happy news to many and sad news to others, posters were consistently supportive and even when there were concerns, criticism was presented with a constructive tone. I really hope those days are not gone forever........

On that note, I'm going to present some happy news that I've been sitting on for a month. I didn't want to take any focus from the excitement of all the wonderful college acceptances that were announced and rightly celebrated. But as things are quieting down a bit and summer is approaching, I am happy to report that as a result of the audition I posted about in early February (seems a lifetime ago!), my D, a soph MT at UMich, has been offered an Equity contract for all four shows in the resident summer season at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera (PCLO) this year, including the part of Alice, the youngest bride in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. The other three shows are Beauty and the Beast, Grease and 42nd Street. She has been hired as a singer/dancer in the ensemble for these three shows with the possibility of other small roles to come. Casting of smaller roles in these shows will be done from the ensemble once the company assembles in Pittsburgh.

When my D found out about the offer, she said one of the first things that occured to her was a memory from just three years ago when she was attending the CMU Pre-College MT program in 2003, after her junior year in highschool. As one of the weekend events scheduled by the program, students were taken to a show at PCLO. My D remembers sitting in the audience and being in awe of the performers she was seeing. She said she rememebers wondering if she would ever be so lucky as to perform at that level.......It is just three years later and she will be one of the people she was dreaming about. She could not be more excited but I'm not sure she will believe it's really true until she's there. I can only hope that this year's CMU pre-college students will again go to PCLO, feel what my D felt and share her good fortune in years to come.

She will be joined in all four shows by one UM junior and two UM seniors (one of whom will also be one of the brides) and two other UM juniors have been hired as ensemble for the three shows other than Brides. I also know of 2 CMU MT students (a junior and freshman!) and one student from PSU (a junior) who will be in the company. There may be more from these two schools I don't know about. I know it will be a wonderful company with which to work and from whom to learn.

theatermom-
So glad you posted today. I have been hoping for several days that one of my OCHSA students who will be attending CMU summer will be able to see your D at PCLO. How cool would that be!

Theatermom, the news about your daughter is fantastic. It is a great opportunity for her at this juncture in her musical theater career. Bravo to her in the casting and I hope she enjoys every minute of the experiences this summer. It is really neat when young people have dreams and look up to those who come before them and then before they know it, they are doing what those they admired were doing not too long ago. Very happy to hear of how it has worked out for your talented daughter and look forward to updates this summer.

Congrats to your daughter. She really must be extremely talented. First she gets an acceptance to UMich, then an equity summer gig at Muny last year and now this year's PCLO, wow!!! She is on a roll.

You have, always, been so gracious on these threads and supportive of others, I am glad good things are going your way! Seems like you have a great summer to look forward to, enjoy.

I was so happy to read your Ds fabulous news. She is building quite the resume and gaining such valuable experience. Thank you for sharing and please be sure to keep us all posted on how her summer progresses.

I was smiling ear to ear when I read this. Theatermom, congratulations to your D -- and to your family! You all must be so excited. I am sure that your D will learn so much this summer and make many friends among the other company members. It will be a summer to remember! Thanks for posting this uplifting news.

This is truly wonderful!! Your daughter really is so talented! I know you are proud! What fabulous things have come her way for the past few years and I'm sure there are many more wonderful things to come! I look forward to seeing her perform this summer!

To any CMU Pre-College Parents and students:
My daughter and I are planning to see theatermom's Daughter at PCLO the night before move in day at CMU. It would be nice if we could get a group of cc'ers who will be in town to go to the show. Anyone interested???

Theatermom-Congratulations! That is so wonderful to hear. You have such a terrific way of being considerate of others feelings even when you have such wonderful news of your own to share. It is really an indication of a fine, humble human being. I'm sure you daughter gets that from you. (Probably gets all her talent from you, too!) I can just imagine her watching the shows from her pre-college days and wondering if it could ever be her up there. That's priceless. To think she's achieved so much in such little time. How terrific. Congratulations again! I wonder if CMU would want her to go talk to the pre-college kids this summer? That would be awesome....the year my D went, they got to meet Sutton Foster. Your daughter may be the next!!!!

My goodness! I posted and then went out for dinner and now come home to find all this? Thank you so much everyone! Sharing good news with CC friends always increases the excitement and joy while sharing hard news mitigates sadness. We are all so lucky to have each other, in good times and bad! I mean that and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

I wanted to add one more thing. It is instructive to mention and remember that my D also auditioned for PCLO last year. At that audition, she sang the first of the two 16 bar cuts she had prepared but then heard "Thank you!" and that was that. This year was obviously a different experience. It is quite remarkable to see what a difference each year of training with caring, supportive and knowledgeable faculty can make. It is important for all of us to remember, parents and students alike, that as much raw talent as they possess and despite the number of performances some (not all!) of them have been in, they have so much yet to learn from every opportunity they are afforded.

Kaysmom - what a nice idea! When is CMU drop-off this year?

Theatermom - We're happy for you and your talented daughter. We were so pleased to get to meet her on our UM audition day, and we appreciate all the help she was to us. She is a very sincerely nice girl, as we found with all the UM students we met. Your daughter is also very beautiful and obviously very talented, and we know she will go far! We're so happy for her success. Wish we could see her in the shows! Also, we appreciate all the help you have been to us and to the others on CC.

CMU pre-college move in day is Saturday, June 24th. We are planning to go on Friday the 23rd. Grease is showing that night. I would love to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers since your daughter has a bigger role, but it is just after parent weekend and just before pre-college is over. Maybe the kids will be going to see it!

Again, I wish the very best to your daughter. I am sure she will have an incredible summer doing what she loves most (and making some money as well!)

Theatermom--
I heard about your D a while ago and was wondering if you'd share the good news with everyone here :o) One of my closest friends in my class will be working with your D! I'm sure I will see her on my road trips out to Pittsburgh this summer!! Best of luck to her!

Theatermom, I like to add my congratulations as well. You must be so proud! I love it when people who's students are already in an MT program post their good news. I gives us beginners something to look forward to.

Theatermom-
Congratulations to your daughter on CLO. My d was in four of their shows last summer and made many lasting friendships with fellow actors. She earned her Equity card and was paid well for doing what she loves to do! If you haven't been inside that theater, you're in for a treat. It has been restored and is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks again to all for your enthusiastic reaction to my D's news. Posting it here on CC makes it feel so real!

psucat - I believe I saw your classmate in The Boyfriend, yes? She is quite a wonderful dancer if I am thinkiing of the right person.

cmujohanna'smom - I went on line today to start the ticket buying process and saw a seating chart of the theater. Can't wait to see the real thing. I've heard it is quite the place. Do you have any idea how many people the theater seats at capacity?

showbizkids (in answer to a question about PCLO you posted as part of a response on another thread) - sadly, the PCLO August shows, Bombay Dreams and Spamalot are both tour imports so my D's shows will not correspond to your Pittsburgh trip. My D will start rehearsals on May 29 for the four PCLO resident company shows which run through July 23. It is a wonderful schedule for her as she will have time to rest up both before and after the summer season. BTW, I looked for your D at Seussical this weekend. Did she decide not to go?

Theatermom,
My classmate was not in The Boyfriend this semester...she was Queenie in Wild Party last semester if that gives you any sort of clue haha. They will meet up sooner or later, and I'm sure you'll get to meet her! I'll also finally meet your D, who I've heard a lot of great things about :o)

Theatremom:
My d had the opportunity to go to NY. SHe got to see Drowsy CHaperone. Two of her CMU MT boys went to Seussical and absoultely loved it!!
