Summer Stock Theatre Auditions

There is a list of selection criteria for Strawhats, not sure if this link will work

Thank you that was really helpful…seems like my straight acting girl would have an extremely hard time getting a slot…

Some award audition slots on a first come first serve basis… others do a paper screening process… SETC has a live screening process to be granted an audition slot.

Hi, We are from Boston and on break. Could you possibly share where the New Hampshire auditions are and if they are open to others in NE.

@elphabac, the information about last year’s NHPTA auditions can be found here. http://nhpta.org/?page_id=68</a> They don’t seem to have put up the date for 2015 yet.

Regarding the NHPTA - There are a TON of local unifieds now. (NYC is even getting into the habit.) It just works better.

Cleveland does them, Buffalo does them, Atlanta does them, etc. They are a better use of auditionee and auditors time and money.

Also, I can’t stress this enough, unsolicited video submission CAN net jobs. I hired an actor last summer out of a random video submission without ever meeting the performer.

It will pay tenfold for your child to have an standard unified type audition (one song, one mono, 90 seconds max) with an additional dance reel. If it is a youtube link even better (I keep Youtube links in an email folder, I don’t keep files). They can send that out to a variety of companies without leaving their dorm room. It could be a useful tool for booking work.

Some companies may invite you to a live audition from it and you can make a decision from there (I did that with a handful of actors, some of whom came and some of whom did not)

@TheaterHiringCo any suggestions of companies that look for straight actors (not MT)?

@bisouu‌ - Do you mean just for Summer Stock? There are a few tiny niche ones (Cape May Playhouse - an AEA house - comes to mind.) Many do a mix of Plays AND Musicals and will cast a few non-singer/dancers (Huron Playhouse). The Outdoor Dramas are great, too. Unto these Hills, etc.
I would recommend scouring the Summer Unified’s websites and looking at their theaters. SETC is listing their companies already, so that might be a nice place to start.
February/March I get a lot of emails stating “I saw you were auditioning at SETC but I can’t make it…so here are my videos”

Thank you!!!

Are there any summer stock auditions on the west coast?

In california… there is Moonlight vista. However there is larger network of professional theatre groups that have auditions year round in southern California including palm canyon, center stage, candlelight pavilion, musical theatre west, la mirada, performance riverside, Lewis family playhouse and the list goes on and on. There used to be a Facebook page that listed most but they moved it to a paying format. Ask around and audition frequently.

@LoveMyMTGirl I am not aware of any “unified” auditions for summer theater in California. This may because most of these theaters are located in a very populous region with plenty of talent to draw on, or maybe the theaters in other areas of the country have a longer tradition that includes unified auditions, or maybe it’s because these are not technically “summer stock”. I don’t know.

@Sguti40 has mentioned the major venues I am aware of. For Southern California, the summer venues such as Moonlight Stage Productions will advertise their auditions in multiple places. I usually check the Equity and Non-Equity listings on Broadway World dot com. You can also sign up to receive audition notices directly from at least some of the theaters. FYI Moonlight already announced its 2015 summer season a while ago (they actually are a year-round theatre, too).

You can also “like” all these theaters on Facebook. Many of the same directors, choreographers, and actors work at Moonlight, Performance Riverside, MTW, La Mirada, etc., so it can potentially be helpful to be seen for an audition at any of these venues.

My son received his email granting him an audition at “Strawhat Audition”… he’s so excited for his first Summer Stock Theater audition :)

Congratulations to those that have secured audition slots at Strawhats. Has anyone heard of any females that have secured their slots yet? So far everyone mentioned appears to be male.

halflokum…I don’t have a kid trying for StrawHats. However, I have some parent friends who have shared that their college aged daughters have gotten slots. FYI.

My S’s letter re: the date and time of his audition is sitting at Otterbein in his mailbox…that’s what I get for letting him take control LOL Strawhats is only open until 1/5, I can’t believe the difference in numbers. 582 females 196 males.

@MTMajorCook … My Son was only notified of being accepted to audition… no date or time as of yet. I made sure everything came here… otherwise it would have been the same for my Son… it would have sat in that mailbox at Carnegie… his grandparents sent him a Card in November and he still has not picked up the Card (and they normally send him a little money also)… LOL… Too Busy I guess.

I also saw the difference in the males vs. females… huge discrepancy …

Does anyone know the total they will accept to audition, and will it be equal males and females?

I also noticed approximately 10 theaters, will there be more attending or is this the norm?

@Inspired59‌ I have to remind my S to get his mail when I know something was sent to him otherwise…it would all still be in that box. They just aren’t in the habit of checking the mail.

From what I understand more theaters will register. There is a list of last years theaters, if you go to the FAQ section there is a link to a list. There are 47 on that list. Also from what I’ve heard it will not be equal as far as males/females, I’m not sure how many they will schedule.

Also as an FYI the advance actor search feature is now working and will show you the audition day a time. Naturally we did not get lucky and S was scheduled on a different day than the group he’s traveling with so he emailed and requested a change…fingers crossed it works.

Halflokum, my D has her StrawHat slot, and I know a lot of girls who do. I don’t think it is skewed. But, remember that there are 3 to 4 times as many girls who ask for a slot than boys, so boys will be more likely to get one than girls.
