My daughter would like to audition for summer playhouses and we're not quite sure how to go about it. We've heard of the Midwest Theatre Auditions but the other ones I've looked at seem to be for professionals only - not students in Musical Theatre Programs (just graduates and often people with professional credits only eg. SETC or UPTA.)
Is this correct?
Where should we start?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

College students can audition for summer work at the spring SETC auditions. One of the big auditions is StrawHats - their audition applications are now open. Another big one is NETC - their applications will open up in the spring.

Fall SETC and UPTA are for professionals. Spring SETC, NETC, StrawHat, Midwest Theatre Auditions, NH Theatre Auditions, Ohio Theatre Alliance, Outdoor Drama auditions are for both professionals and college students.

If your D is currently in a MT program her teachers should be able to show her where to look for information on all of these (and other) auditioning oppotunities. :)

For the most part, “summer stock” is a term for paid professional work that happens in the summer at companies that generally hire a repertory company to perform in multiple shows over the course of the summer. Some companies will hire HS students, others will not. “Summer stock” is not a summer training program… although some summer stock companies do have education and outreach programs that are tuition based for HS students and others.
