We have two kids at USC & would like to know others' experiences with different summer storage options--prices, convenience, good/bad, etc. To date, they never stored anything in prior summers. S had a lease that overlapped last summer so he just moved his things from one apartment to another; D left things with him. The 1st 2 years, he stored at a friends & brought the rest home. Thanks!

hey, I used this company called College Storage and Student Services, its pretty easy and the service was good You just have to sign up on line and call them to schedule a door-to-door pickup

In the last few weeks of the spring semester, there are 2 companies that come to campus.
Students can chose one of them, call ahead for a reservation and they will bring a large crate close to their dorm or apartment. Usually they leave the crate there for 24 hours so the student has to pack everything up and place it in the crate. Then the company comes to pick up the crate. They store the loaded crate in an airconditioned storage facility for the summer. The student must arrange the date and location for the crate to arrive at the new residence for unpacking. The crate is delivered in the late summer to the student’s new residence and the company comes to pick up the empty crate at the end of the unloading period. My S & D used both companies and it was a lot easier than loading everything in a trunk and driving it to a storage place. The cost is around $300 for the crate including delivery, storage and pick up. There are hundreds of these crates placed all around campus at the end of spring semester.

I used Door to Door one year. It was reasonably priced, but the convenience was that I never had to go to a storage facility to get my things when I returned to town. I literally filled up the storage unit they dropped off, called them about a week before I wanted it delivered and the put it right in front of my new apartment in the fall.

My freshman year, I found two friends and we got a 5x5 storage area at this place called All American Storage, just a block or two from campus. It ended up costing about $50 each, and there was enough room for all of us to get all our stuff in there. Of course you’re going to have to find a friend with a car to move the things, but it was all there and relatively cheap so I’m not complaining.

Freshman year I used storquest self storage on grand st. I shared a unit with 2 other people so the price came out to be reasonable. The storage facility is newly renovated, clean, well lit. I dont know if all units are climate controlled, but the facility is air conditioned and kept cool. Last summer I used Fort Self Storage on Central. Fort storage is further away, but much cheaper. I rented a unit half the size of the storquest one for a fraction of the price I paid with my 2 friends (I don’t remember prices at this time). Fort storage seemed secure and clean but wasnt as modern and well lit as Storquest.

Funny how this thread revived after over a year of being dormant. I guess folks may be starting to think about this again? People may wish to chat with friends who will be sticking around over the summer to see if they can store their stuff in unused apartment space for a nominal fee as one more option (depending on the amount of “stuff” involved). That’s the approach my kids have taken.

Last spring/summer was exceptional & insane–they ended up moving stuff from D’s apartment to S’s apartment. From there to storage for 1 month at a nominal charge. From storage to another friend’s apartment for several weeks. From that apartment to D’s new apartment at last! It was a lot more moves than I would ever want to make in such a short time, but it worked for S & D.

This summer, D has two apartments that she will be renting at the same time, I believe! I think the lease on her old unit may not end until July and her new apartment may start in July, but she is not sure and hasn’t checked!

Oh well, not really my issue to worry about. It will work out one way or another. :)

We had a crazy switch from Spring-Summer last year, too. It turns out USC summer housing is only available one week after Spring housing shuts down, so after checking rates for one-week of storage, we ended up driving down and picking up all of her stuff (6 hour drive each way…), kept it all in the SUV for the week and drove back a week later (6 hour drive each way…) to put it in the new apartment. It looks like my kiddo will have a double apartment for a bit this summer, too - maybe she will try to sublet her sublet…

I guess the central message is that YES, it will all work out somehow!

Yes, so far, my kids have never had success with subletting, but that IS an option.

spammers… so annoying. BOTH posters above.
