Summer Storage

Has anyone used a storage facility close to NYU? What were the terms, approximately? How easy is it to get them to deliver in a timely fashion to the dorms? Need to store D's bedding, dishes, winter clothes etc. Figure it would be less expensive to store there and have delivered to dorm than ship it all back here. It's going to be quite a few boxes - maybe 10 or so. Help!!!!! Can't believe we are just a month or so away from getting our kids back home for a while!

Wow, it is close to the time for the end of another academic year. Sonny may be staying in the city for work/ internship. Don’t know about cost of apartment and the in-between periods where stuff should be stored, though we have option of hauling stuff back and forth from home. So, your question is making me think too. Mine is just a search results list. No personal experience, though as I mentioned below Manhattan mini-storage might have been recommended here by a student. They do have locations close to NYU, with “free” pick-up?

1) [Self Storage Facility: Keepers Self Storage New York, 444 E 10th Street New York NY 10009 - US Storage Search](http://www.usstoragesearch.com/new-york-self-storage/new-york-self-storage/facility-15176/member/default.aspx?city=new-york&state=new-york&ID=15176&storage_type=S)

25% off for 4 months storage, high rating (4* plus for this facility, also locations in Manhattan near NYU?)

2) [Manhattan Mini Storage Rentals; New York City mini storage units with self storage & moving services throughout Manhattan.](http://www.manhattanministorage.com/index.jsp)

This might have been mentioned by someone in this forum? Locations close to NYU and “free pick-up?”

3) [storage facilities in nyc - Google Search](http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=storage+facilities+in+nyc&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)

A list of available storage facilities with google search. I would not recommend storage places in the Bronx. If price is decent, then some place in Manhattan close to NYU probably best. Though locations in certain parts of Brooklyn may be OK.

Thanks! Has anyone ever used CollegeBoxes or Collegiate Storage and Rentals? I know collegeboxes would cost me about $600 (D has lots of c…p!) I will price these other options, too.

“Box MY Dorm” handles colleges and universities nationwide. They send out all your packing supplies to pack up all of your belongings, Then the movers come to your dorm, pick up, store and redeliver all your belongings in time for fall session to start. Easy and wonderful for the student who doesnt want to lug all their belongings around. My child’s belongings were returned exactly how they were sent out. I will use “Box My Dorm” every semester for all of my children

tracey,

Are they priced reasonably for what you get?

I went with the $300 package. It included 6 boxes all the packing supplies, white glove service, dorm to dorm pick and delivery

Thanks. Tracey. What is the size of each box approximately? I got a price of $92 (approx) for one month storage for a 5’ x 8’ storage space with pick up by Manhattan Mini Storage. $72 (approx) a month for a 4’ x 4’ (or 5’) storage space. Both prices quoted were discounted prices. Go in and out as you please.

Oh, Manhattan Mini-Storage also provides R/T car service and free box delivery for orders over $50, along with free off-street parking.

We ended up going with Collegiate Storage and Rentals. Got two of what they call “humongous” boxes that hold up to 125 pounds each plus two book boxes for $560 and change…they bring the boxes and then pick up, store for the summer, and bring back to D in the fall. This sounds like a small fortune, but I think I have spent almost $1,000 shipping stuff to her this year and to have her ship it back and then ship back again…makes no sense. I’m hoping that this plus her two humongous suitcases and rolling duffel that are making the flight home with her will do the trick. She may ship one box of stuff that she does not want at college next year but this same company will pick that box up and ship for her.

writestuff,

I think your price is too high for our budget, which I am hoping will be $0. Haha, that means sweat labor on our part. I am going to visit sonny this Sunday and have him give me some things, e.g., winter items, that I will bring home. Then he gets to pack two big suitcases and leave them in grandma’s place in NYC for the summer.

It is complicated because he needs the things for around 8 weeks since he will be in NYC for that time doing a paid internship. (Got to conserve the cost because before you know it, he is left with hardly anything for working most of the summer.)

So, we are going back and forth, using grandma’s place and hoping to avoid the storage costs, if possible.

Your deal sounds good though for avoiding the long distance hassles. Well worth the money for that.

OK evolving, rub it in…you actually live close enough to see your sonny on occasion…sniff sniff…jk! I get D home in less than three weeks (nothing past last day of regular classes) so I am pretty happy about that! And I agree, the summer storage I went with is really pricey, but at least it’s less than shipping!!!

Haha, writestuff,

And you get to rub it in that your D is home with you for the summer. My S will be away for 2/3rds of the summer. Then after 3 weeks home with us, he is back at school for an early start (Project Outreach). Wow, a long academic year again after that.

So there, we are even steven. All kidding aside, I do wish you a very good summer with your D. They grow up way too fast! I recently placed S’s toddler picture in front of my dining table place mat so I can be reminded of the time we had him just for ourselves! Hubby took a look and said, “The years sure go by inexorably fast, like the turning of the pages of a book.” He then stated he felt sad and I had to pep him up!
