Does anyone have any info or recommendations regarding storage. I am thinking about putting some of my son's stuff in storage that I don't want to lug back and forth. Mostly it is his bedding, mattress pad, desk supplies, fan and any books he may need and a desk chair. You know all the stuff he needs during the school year but not when he is home for summer. I am unsure if I should store any clothing (winter such as sweaters). Have any of you stored clothing? I don't want the stuff to get all musty smelling or have the moths hit it. I have never used a storage facility so I really have no idea what they are like so any info is appreciated.

D stored stuff for 2 summers, and also the entire spring semester when she was abroad as a junior. Can’t remember if she stored any clothes, but she stored all the other stuff you list, and even her printer. She used a self-storage place near WFU (I think it was this place: [University Self Storage - 2720 University Pkwy. Winston-Salem, NC 27105](http://winstonsalem.university.localstoragepro.com/T1/)) and didn’t have any problems with dampness or mustiness.

I’m pretty sure she said they have some climate-controlled units, but none were available when she went to rent the first time. Since everything was fine, she stayed with the uncontrolled ones since they were less expensive. For the summers, she shared the space with a couple friends, which made the whole thing quite inexpensive.

One word of caution – be sure your S reads the fine print on the contract and knows exactly what he has to do to end the monthly charge. At the end of the first summer, one of D’s friends was the last one to take his stuff out of storage. He left the lock on the door, which the storage company took to mean the unit was still in use – so they sent a bill for an additional month’s charge.

The UPS store here offers storage opportunities, although I hear it’s expensive. One of my friends from California made plans to store her stuff at a place a few minutes away from Wake and is apparently only paying like $50.00 for the whole summer. Unfortunately, she set this all up a month or two ago so she thinks the price went up since then.

Just be careful if the place seems new! One of the girls on my hall went to a place that doesn’t offer insurance and isn’t even two years old! Just make sure that they have all this before buying a unit.

Thank you Pink and CBBB for the information. I called the storage facility that CBBB mentioned and they were very helpful. Yes, it is alittle late in the game as most returning parents/students rent the space in late March but I was able to secure a climate controlled unit for my son’s belongings. I had to take a slightly larger unit than I had planned since the small spaces were all rented. It isn’t much bigger and I fear that I may have underestimated all of my sons things anyway so it will be fine. They had several smaller locker units available but since my son is storing a desk chair and a large tv those wouldn’t work for me. As for the fees, I didn’t find them too bad. It will run me about $125 for the summer and I am planning on storing everything but his summer clothes and some athletic equipment. I have told him to wash everything (towels, bedding, comforter etc) before I get there and also to sell any unwanted books. It is his responsibility to clean his room and organize his belongings, I am merely providing the transportation to the storage facility and home. Here’s hoping it goes smoothly.
