Summer studying

Has anyone done summer studying in preparation of their first semester of college?

What did u do? Did it help? Was it a waste of time?

Any tips?

Review what you learned the year before for math classes, get use to writing papers and try to figure out what study strategies work best for you.

I’m teaching myself Calc III which I’m taking this fall when I return to school. It’s going great, so hopefully me teaching myself Calc III can guarantee me an A.

I’m also brushing up on spanish which I’m taking in the fall as well (taking Spanish 101) and it’s also going well.

Hopefully this all pays off. If not, it’s whatever. I have no job this summer so it’s not like I would’ve wasted my time haha.

I’m studying AP Physics C from Princeton Review over the summer because I never took physics in HS and I’m majoring in engineering :stuck_out_tongue: Also, Study Hacks gives great advice about studying in college [Study Hacks Blog Archive How to Become a Zen Valedictorian: Decreasing Your Stress Without Decreasing Your Ambition](How to Become a Zen Valedictorian: Decreasing Your Stress Without Decreasing Your Ambition - Cal Newport)

So far, I’ve read How to Win at College and How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport, and I’m planning to read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster. I think this will help me get back into the rhythm of reading as well as give me some useful tips for college.

It’s not my first year, but I’ve been reviewing my Chinese in preparation for further Chinese courses next year.

I’m enjoying my damn summer.

Only class I’ll study for, before I take it, is Chem II, which is in the spring semester. I haven’t had Chem in 3 years and I placed out out of Chem I with AP credits so I want to get caught up before I take the course.

I’m reading a lot, about 150-200 pages or so a day of: some continental philosophy, a book of poetry by Elizabeth Bishop, and Middlemarch by George Elliot. When they’re finished, I’ll head to the library again. Probably in August I’ll start watching some lectures from Yale’s website and taking notes, just to get used to writing quickly again. I think it’s mainly about keeping the mind sharp as opposed to studying anything in particular.

Plan for every summer until you are married: find romance, drink too much at least once, go to at least one mountain and one beach.

Summer is so little about books and so much about life.

Not necessarily, although I looked ahead in some books for a class I was nervous about.

When I arrived before classes started last year, I studied some Russian.

Helped a little, but everybody is different.

If it is 1st semester you’re talking about, things might start slow.

Nope, just enjoying the summer since I have no idea what to expect.

I’ve been reading though, more than I ever have in any summer vacation in the past.

8 books so far, most of them 500+ pages. Even though some people might’ve read more than that, I feel accomplished :)

Absolutely nothing except having fun and wasting time. You’ll be fine, relax.

I’ve reviewed my pre-calc stuff on vectors and read about vector functions, covering first unit of Calc III and have read/done problem sets for the first three chapters for Physics.

I hope to read a two or three more chapters for physics and review some chem
