Summer Term 2010

This question has probably been asked before, but I cannot seem to find thread it was answered in, so I apologize. Anyways, if we are accepted to a UC campus, are we allowed to enroll in summer courses and start then, or are we forced to wait until fall quarter?

yes u can enroll in summer. in fact if you are Haas you have to start in june/july.

Good to hear! I’m planning on taking a summer course if I get into UCLA, too.

@Calbearguy: No, they got rid of summer for Haas due to budget cuts. Students now take the accounting courses in the fall and spring. NO summer required

Do you know if that is only for Haas, Lakerforever? Or, are all the UC’s contemplating cutting the summer sessions?

^Oh, I didn’t mean that Hass cut summer entirely. They jsut used to require students to take accounting in the summer, but now we can take it in the fall/spring. people can still take summer courses if they want to. I don’t think any UCs are going to completely cut summer session. They’ll just cut some classes

Thanks for the information, Lakerforever. That’s good news to hear. I hope that the number of classes cut by the UC campuses during the summer (as well as during the subsequent quarters) are as few as possible.

@lakerforever24 oh ok, i just knew that before you were REQUIRED to take it over summer.

I hope this doesn’t sound like a silly question- but upon acceptance to a UC, we can take summer classes at a community college before we start in the fall, right?

^^i think u can only do that if you need to finish your IGETC, i’m not too sure tho.

Sign ups (UCLA, for example) start in Feb for current students and March for visiting students.

I want to take some pretty impacted classes in the summer, and I am worrying they will fill up fast. Can I sign up in March (when summer courses are open to visiting students) and transfer it to my new student account in May if I get in?

So if you’ve already applied you have to sign up as a visiting student? What if we get/don’t get accepted, what impact will that have on taking summer classes?

Rpicton, your question is exactly the same as mine. I want to take a class in the Summer that fills up rather quickly, so would I be able to register as a Visiting Student? I’d assume that it would be fine, since I would be using the same name and information. Maybe they’d be able to transfer it over to my new ‘account’ if I am accepted to UCLA.

Hiroshi66, here’s what I think I’m suppose to do:

1) Sign up for the courses I want ASAP in March as a Visiting Student, but don’t pay any fees besides deposit. The deadline for all other fees would be late May so I’ll know my admission status by then.
2) Come Late April/Early May:
[ul]
[]If I get into UCLA
[]Ask them to switch my Visiting account to my Student account
[]If this doesn’t work, and the class is full, I can drop the courses from my Visiting account and quickly sign up using my student account.
[]I’m going to lose my $150 deposit but will have no other fees left over from my Visiting account. Now I just pay the normal fees a Student would
[/ul]
[]If I don’t get into UCLA
[ul]
[]Drop the courses and lose my $150 deposit.
[/ul]
That’s a perfect idea, Rpicton! Thanks for the suggestion. I think I’m going to do just that. Good luck!

Rpicton, I have some bad news. I called UCLA today and asked if our Visiting account can ‘transfer’ into a Student account if we are accepted, and they told me that it cannot.

So I wonder if the classes we take under our Visiting account will count for us if we are accepted? The person I talked to hinted at that, but I will call tomorrow for more information. I wonder how this all works?

Hiroshi66, thank you for calling. I’ll probably just do this then:
-drop the courses from my Visiting account and quickly sign up using my Student account.

But that would just be for cheaper tuition purposes. If I don’t want to drop then quickly sign up I’ll probably just pay the Visiting student fees. I’m pretty sure the classes would still count and we’ll get credit, just we have to pay the higher fees.

Let me know the details when you call tomorrow, thanks.

Yeah, I’ll probably do that as well. The only problem would be, I think I read somewhere on the UCLA website that registration in a summer class is not complete until all fees are paid. I’m not sure if this means that our place in the class is not guaranteed until after we pay. So if that is true, then we wouldn’t be able to add the class until we play. It’s different than the way CC classes are handled, where often we can add the class prior to paying.

Note: Your registration fee… reserves your space in Summer Sessions courses. The rest is not due until May 21, 2010. See below.

I just did a comparison to see the cost of various options (this assumes I get in):
Option 1: Hopefully the classes aren’t full (yeah right) and I can sign up as soon as I get admitted as a student.
2010 Unit Fees $229 per unit * 16 units (8 in A, 8 in C) = $3664
Campus Fee $62
Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) Fees $6 per unit * 16 units = $96
Total: $3822

Option 2: Sign up as a visitor to reserve my spot, then once I get in a) drop the course using my visitors account and b) add it using my new student account.
Deposit lost: $150

  • Option 1 $3822
    Total: $3972

Option 3: Sign up as a visitor and have the units apply toward my student account*
2010 Unit Fees $286 per unit * 16 = $4576
Registration Fee $350
Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) Fees $6 per unit * 16 units = $96
Total: $5022

Option 3 might have a few potential problems.

  • Will this make me have too many units to be a junior level transfer student? I think they allow up to 130 quarter units of university level transferrable classes, but I’m not sure.

Thank you so much for the information, Rpicton. That’s very helpful, and it makes sense! Thanks for your help. :)

Yes, Option 3 has some problems – it’s more expensive than the other two options, and it may give us too many units. Since we only need to pay the $150 deposit to ensure our spot in the class, I think we can just quickly drop the class from the visiting account and add the class on the student account. I hope this will work! UCLA doesn’t have a waiting list that automatically adds students to a course if someone drops, right? I was afraid that if we drop the class from our visiting account, another student will be immediately signed up and take our spot.

But let’s see if we can do Options 1 or 2. I wonder if our Visiting UCLA ID will be the same as when we are officially accepted as students?

Thanks, Rpicton!
