I contacted my school and asked them how i would recieve FA for the summer term, they reccomened that i fill out the 2009-2010 form. Okay, simple right?

Well, i had already filled out one for my fall/spring term for that time.

Do i just go ahead and fill another one out?

Sounds like your school includes the summer term as part of the preceding year meaning it comes under the 2009-2010 FAFSA (my daughter’s school does so also, some include it as part of the following year). So, yes, to get summer aid you will have to complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA (using 2008 tax return data). The 2010-2011 FAFSA will be used for your fall/spring aid (and next summer if you do summer classes).

So would that mean i have to refile that one?

Which one? I was assuming you had not already filed a 2009-2010 FAFSA from your original post. You should not have to refile anything. The 2009-2010 FAFSA is for the 2009-2010 school year. If you have not filed one already then you will need to file one if you are applying for aid for the 2009-2010 school year (summer being part of that from what you said). If you have already filed a 2009-2010 you do not have to refile it. Your school may have a form you have to complete saying you are applying for summer aid (my daughter’s school does anyway).

If you have already completed a 2010-2011 FAFSA for the 2010-2011 school year you do not have to refile that.

If a student has received their Pell Grant for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010, to the maximum amount, then would they not wind up with a semester missing grant aid?

EX: (this could be wrong)

Fall 2009 Spring 2010 Pell grant funds for each semester

Summer 2010 Fall 2010 Pell grant funds for each semester

Spring 2011 Fall 2011 ???

Just reread your original post - you have already completed a 2009-2010 FAFSA? No you should not have to refile it to get summer aid. If you have already filed a 2009-2010 one you cannot file another one. Perhaps the person you were talking to must not have realized you had already done one?

Mom4 - starting this school year there is year round Pell. So even if a students has had the full Pell for fall and summer semesters they can get additional Pell for the summer (assuming they qualify). This is a new thing - last summer there would have been no additional Pell if the student had already received their full year’s Pell. This summer there is.

That is great news, but I guess it confuses me because doesn’t the Pell have an annual cap? ($5350 for 2009 - 10).
How much would the summer Pell be? Any info?

There was a cap before now, but now a student can receive additional Pell. How much would depend on the enrollment ad EFC, just like a regular semester. If a student has a 0 EFC and is eligible for the maximum Pell then to get a full semesters Pell of $2775 in the summer would require a student to be enrolled full time (12 hours at most schools). It is probably fairly unusual for a student to be enrolled for that many hours in the summer. My daughter (who qualifies for full Pell) is planning to do 6 hours this summer so we are expecting her to get the 1/2 time semester’s Pell of $1387.

I seem to remember when I read the rules that a student can get up to 2 full year Pells in the year, but I don’t see how that would be doable at most school. I know last summer (when there was no summer Pell) my daughter took 13 hours and had to petition to be allowed to take that may as 12 is the max usually allowed in Summer at her school. So 24 for a additional full year Pell would be impossible (not that she would even think of doing that).

I believe there are a boatload of complicated rules (written by people who probably have no clue about financial aid or college) for the FA officers to wade through to award additional Pell.

Now if a student has already maxed out their Stafford loans for the year, then there is no more available for the summer.
