After my son got accepted for the summer term, I realized that meant filing a 2016/2017 FAFSA if he wishes to receive any aid (since Summer is considered part of the current academic calendar). I did that last night and don’t expect FSU to have that info reflected on their website for several days.
However, I would still like to get an idea of what we are looking at financially for the Fall term. Any idea when I can expect to see that information reflected in his myFSU account? We should see some info in there soon related to financial aid, right? What are others seeing at this point?
FSU is his #1 choice and we are thrilled that he got accepted; but, there are some big decisions that need to be made before paying that deposit.
For financial aid for fall, you need to fill out the 2017/2018 FAFSA; did you mean summer in your second paragraph? Bright futures doesn’t apply to summer terms, however florida prepaid does. You can get the cost per credit hour on FSU’s website and then subtract whatever florida prepaid covers. Other than that, FSU determines if you need institutional need-based aid on their own terms. I received aid originally, but then I received $3,000 from local scholarships and so FSU took away my institutional grant (not scholarships) because I no longer needed it
No. He applied for Fall 2017 but received a Summer 2017 admissions offer. Since his original application was for the Fall, we only completed the 2017/2018 FAFSA. Receiving a Summer admissions offer meant we now needed to submit the 2016/2017 FAFSA as well. Fall 2017 is in next year’s calendar while Summer 2017 is in this year’s.
I was only pointing that out because I knew he wouldn’t see anything for Summer financial aid yet, since that FAFSA was just filed last night. But, I was still curious what his Fall package would look like since that FAFSA was filed months ago and FSU already has that info.
Anyway, to answer my own original question, I called the financial aid office. They expect to have financial aid packages posted within a week.
Fall/Spring financial aid, especially if he’s an in-state student, won’t be finalized for several months (and even then, “finalized” is a loose term with FSU). FSU won’t know what things like Bright Futures will be until the state’s budget is passed - and the 2017 legislative session doesn’t end until early May.
They’ll likely have a general idea of the different university scholarships and grants they can award, and of course they have the always-available loans, but if your son is in-state he may not have a truly final figure until July, and even then things might change when FSU disburses financial aid.
