Are there any summer undergraduate programs open for freshmen? I know that most are open for sophomores-seniors, some have "rising sophomores" (what exactly does that mean??)

I'm trying to narrow down my options as far as which programs to apply to for the summer after my freshman year. Since most have a Dec.-Mar. deadline, I want to have my options lined up.

I'm referring to the summer undergraduate programs related to biology, medicine, etc.

A rising sophomore is a student in the summer between their freshman and sophomore year.

Many programs /do/ take in freshmen, but the programs select students who can contribute – which means upperclassmen have the advantage, as they’ve completed more coursework and may even have prior research experience.

[unsolicited advice] Apply to a range – some more selective, some less selective. To stand a higher chance of success, work hard in your frosh classes and get to know your professors. Do research on-campus with a professor.
