Hi!
I am going to be applying to USC this coming fall, and I wanted to know if the Summer@USC Discover Engineering camp would be beneficial to my application, because it is quite expensive (I can afford it, just curious). I know 3 people who did this camp and all 3 got into USC… Just wondering anyones thoughts/comments about this program! Thanks!
This is another “pay to play” program. It will not help you with admission. You might want to apply to USC mission engineering summer program. It is a free program.
@Ballerina016 I cannot attend 2/4 days for USC mission would that be ok? Also would going to discover engineering harm me? Because 3/3 people I knew who took it, got in. Another reason why I am thinking to take this is that it would help me strengthen my “Why USC” supplement.
Of course not. It is a good enrichment program. Just don’t expect it to help you with admission. The program is not very selective. You can find list of selective summer program on MIT website.
@MathFan21 , go if the program offers what you want and you think the experience will be enriching. Don’t go if you’re trying for an admissions tip, because that shouldn’t be part of the equation. All three of my sons went to USC’s summer program, and I can’t tell you how much they loved the experience – it’s well organized, the speakers are amazing, and USC arranges many fun activities both on campus and around LA. Oldest applied to a competitive program at USC, and he did get in, along with four of his summer program classmates (who were all in a program related to their chosen major). I would never say that the summer program is what cinched the deal though. Feel free to PM if you have general questions about the experience.
It’s not going to hurt you and in may in fact help. Some people make connections with professors there that have helped them in the admission process. They are very good programs but are expensive, so go if you want to and for the experience, not just the admission favor that may or may not come into play.
