Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (NC)

WoW Maryfrance that’s awesome. Hopefully, one day you’ll be a Tar Heel. :)

Rising Junior

Congrats MaryFrance! I got the letter today. Got into NCCU (North Carolina Central University) From June 21 to July 18. I wonder how they do assignments. It says it was based on career/subject interests mentioned in application and on distance from campus. I don’t care about distance so much as I care about the topics covered, but if they’re all the same I guess I don’t care either way.

The problem is that they want a response by April 30th and I may not hear back from a few of the programs I’ve applied to by then… And even if I do I’m not sure which ones I’m interesting in going to.

^Yeah that’s exactly my problem. Won’t find out until early to mid May on a few of them. And what am I supposed to tell them, “Oh please extend the deadline because I’m waiting on another summer program which if accepted I will choose to attend instead of yours.”

I think I’m just going to accept, and then if I get into my other one then I’ll shoot them a letter saying that I’ve decided not to do it. I mean there’s no deposit, so what’s the worst that can happen?

Regardless, congratulations moodragonx and MaryFrance for getting in. I’m not entirely sure how they decide, but I think they put heavy emphasis on the topics selected, that way they don’t have to run every program at every campus. I’m not sure how much location matters, but they sent me from Wake County all the way out to Boone.

Secret Asian Man- Thats what I am thinking of doing also. Which university did you get into for SV and what are the other programs you are waiting for.

I got into App State. I’m waiting for Summer on the Edge at Duke, which is the main one I’m hoping to get into. I also applied to NCSU’s week-long engineering camps but I’m probably not going to attend those anyway so that one’s no big deal.

Have anybody received letters from the site you were accepted to that has what classes you will be taking? If so, from what site? On the first letter that said I was accepted, it said that we will receive those letters in a couple of days. Its been 11 days and I still haven’t gotten the letter from my site… I want to see if I will be interested in the classes being offered. I’m still debating on whether on going to SVSM or another camp…

My daughter received a packet from UNCC two or three days ago. Her older brother went to this same camp two years ago and really enjoyed it!

I know I might be in too much of a hurry, but should I contact my site’s organizer? Anybody from APP STATE received their packet yet? Another one of my camps deadline is this Friday. I think I’m going to accept Summer Ventures then…

Oh, and Secret Asian Man, did you receive your packet yet? What did you sign up for and what did you get.

To past APP STATE SVSMers, are there math research classes? I know there’s like a Problem Solving Math class but it’s not research related. I really wanted to do something with math research. I signed up for math for my 1-5 choices. I know last year APP didn’t have a real math research class (there were computer and something called teaching math to students classes last year). So if any past APP ST SVSM participants can help me up with this it would be great. I think APP ST is a primarily Science site?

Bump… Bump…

Mail just came in today… and still no sign of summer ventures. :frowning: Anyone from APP ST received their packet?? I think I’m going to decline summer ventures since my other camp’s deadline it today. No motivated to go somewhere that says “you will receive your packet in the next few days” and it’s been exactly 14 days. Oh well…

I have not gotten mine yet either.

ASU website says they sent them out on April 21. Still no sign.

My packet from NCCU apparantly got lost int he mail sent back to them and then they sent it back to me.

Just today 3 things happened. Thank god for irony.

I sent in my notification that I was planning on attending summer ventures. I’m still unsure but either way, I said yes for the time being (though I feel horrible about it and would feel even worse if I had to go back on my word… see #3)

I received the information packet from the campus and module/courses offered. I’d really like to look into the Biomedical Research one if possible… assuming I go.

I received my e-mail from TASS notifying me that I was accepted to the seminar at Indiana University Bloomington. I reapeat: thank god for irony.

Well I’m torn as it stands but I suppose I have a few days to decide. I actually just yesterday got word from another program I got into at UNC Wilmington but the dates don’t coincide so I’m fine in attending it.

All this and NCSSM felt the need to falt out reject me without even a waitlist. Oh well. :(

Don’t feel bad about NCSSM - not many people were waitlisted this year. And quite a few smart people I know were rejected too.

So my packet finally came about 5 days before the deadline. I reluctantly sent in the acceptance even though I don’t really want to go. I really hope I get the internship I applied for but I won’t find out until May 15.

Secret Asian Man:

No one was waitlisted yet, I called appeals, they said they would make the waitlist out of those that appealed

Do any of you know what the acceptance rate was? How many were accepted, rejected, etc. Thanks.

i cant believe it took so long for some of you to get your information packets! im going to UNCC and i got my packet on april 8! i’ve already sent in all my forms and now im just waiting for june 21 to roll around…and i know 2 girls at my school who didnt get in to NCSSM, one wasnt very legit but the other has already taken and gotten A’s in AP calc and stat. and she didnt get in. must be hard, eh?

I got into NCSSM and they accepted around 370 this year.
