Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics?

Bump, definitely not a lot of interest in the program compared to last year…

If anyone is applying to this program, feel free to post or ask me questions directly.

Def interested. Just moved out of NC. Is it only for in state?

Yeah, just for NC residents. But if you still have an address or parent in NC you can attend.

Nate42: We know of a few students very interested in Summer Ventures. However, all are right now totally enthralled with the NCSSM application process. Governor’s School is also top on the list.
SVSM sometimes flies under the radar and since you can no longer attend NCSSM residential and SVSM, many thinking they have a real shot at NCSSM are not putting a lot of effort into SVSM. Last summer there were a lot who had to pull out of SVSM once they got accepted into NCSSM.

The good news is that those working hard to get into SVSM may have a better chance! People seem to LOVE SVSM so keep promoting it!

Hey guys, i am interested in applying this year for summer ventures because of all the good reviews. I was wondering if any of you guys sent your sat, psat or act scores with the application.

No, you don’t have to send any of those. Just your transcript.

ok, and also on the application it asks if you are part of or entered in any math science or computer clubs and competitions. I have not done any of this, so will it hurt my chances of getting in?

@taben: That happens a lot where I come from as well. We could have more qualified students applying for SVSM if they would realize just how great of a program it really is! I loved my time there.

@dukehopeful: At the time of my application I had not entered any science or math competitions. I was accepted and received my first choice at UNCC, taking Topics In Biology.

Summer Ventures is a unique science and mathematics opportunity where students get hands-on experience in advanced program topics of their choosing, then apply that knowledge to complete a research project they design. How would you use this experience to enhance your science and math academic goals?
Ok so I am kinda confused on what this question is asking and what i should write??

I answered this question in a way that showed how summer ventures would help me in the long run with either entering STEM or Medicine as a career choice. Being from a region that is not represented very well and has next to no opportunities for students with interest in such topics, I simply stated this would be a great program for me since I do not have the chance to do anything offered there in my home town.

ok thanks nate 42, sent my app hope for the best :)

Good luck!

Hello people, I was wondering if anybody who attended this program last year who still checks this forum who took computer science or engineering could tell me how that went for you, thanks in advance.

My son went to Summer Ventures last summer. He went to ECU and was placed in the programs for Computer Programming, Engineering Explorations, and Physics. The computer part at ECU was Python programming. He had self taught himself some before he went before he realized that this was the language they were teaching. In the Engineering section, they did some CAD and used the 3D printer.

Even though he completely enjoyed his time at ECU, ASU’s computer science program last year dealt with computer hacking. He would have enjoyed that end of the computer world more, but didn’t get assigned to that program. Think he was assigned to ECU because they offered the 3 general areas that he requested. If you want the computer hacking end more than the computer programming, I would suggest you research the other options that ASU offers on their Summer Ventures website. If they have other options you like, list those with the computer science. The selection process is still a gamble though in regards to where you will be assigned.

Thanks for the tip mich5225 I will keep that in mind when I apply.

Can past applicants post their stat please, whether you got accepted wait listed or rejected.

I just submit my application online, worked super hard on the essay portion. really want to go
my stat isn’t exactly beautiful, which i kinda explained in my essay. WGPA is 3.9 last year, probably 4.1-4.2 ish after the first semester grades. 1870 SAT on first attempt, my only real accolade is HOSA nationals last year. expecting a great recommendation from my apstat teacher since i have the highest grade out of all her student so far.
What’s my chance?? Which part of the application is most important to them??

Our child had stats very similar to your’s AS1996, in terms of GPA and SAT. Had a lot of leadership in sports and music, a lot of community service and some Duke TIP and NC State math and science program background (some…not a lot-a couple of camps). Could not do math/science clubs at school in high school because of conflicts of time with sports and music programs and noted this in the essay (i.e. wanted more of a chance to do MORE with science and needed the summer opportunity). Grades in science courses were always A in honors courses and had science teacher do rec. Focused essay on science skills and interest…and talked about being very well rounded.

Result: Waitlisted

Several weeks later moved to Finalist (accepted)

Last year, I believe most waitlist students got in because the sites got extra money from the State a few weeks after the initial acceptances went out.

The advice our school counselor gave once waitlisted? Call the actual site director (you find out your site/Univ. when you are waitlisted) and tell them that you appreciate the waitlist spot and remain very, very interested. Also, if TRUE, tell them you will take an opening even in a course you did not list as a preference (our child did this, but stated it only in regard to science as she did not want a math based course…and she emailed the site director rather than calling, and received a kind response telling her to sit tight and that she would likely come off the waitlist soon…which did happen).

Good Luck!

@taben1112
thank you so much for the info and the story. I’ll just have to wait until April to find out. It’s gonna be two very long months…
just couple more questions,

 1. Do SVSM put limits on how many students from each district or each school can attend??? I live in a very populated school district (Mecklenburg) and many of my friends who also applied have way better stats them i do.
 2. Whats the most important part of the application? the math/science EC, other EC such sports, recommendation letter/teacher evaluation, GPA, SAT score???

I’m an alternate right now, when do I find out which campus that I’m an alternate to?
