Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics?

I don’t think alternates get to know until after April 30th when all the finalists reply

Yes, that is correct.

Last year, I remember that it was a frenzy at this point trying to determine what campus as what classes everyone would be assigned to.

I highly doubt my summer will compare to last years but I’m hopeful nonetheless.

are you doing governors school nate?

I was nominated for Governors school but declined due to a program I am pursuing at Davidson College this summer.

so what happen to all the alternates??? should we just wait until may 1st to see if any spots has opened up??? is there any thing alternates can do in the mean time to increase their chance such as contacting the adviser???

From what I remember it’s just a waiting game for the alternates. You won’t be notified for a while until they have compiled the decisions from all the finalists. By hey! Don’t worry! There were 40 alternates at UNCC last year!

Did anyone else get notified online that they were a finalist and then receive a letter saying they were an alternate?

^ thats bizarre. Did anyone get into ASU

I’m not sure which location I’ve been assigned to. Are we supposed to receive something in the mail about that soon?

Alright. Was accepted into SVSM at NCCU. Any good? Four choices for topics of interest were(in order of ranking)-Biology, Chem, Computer Science, and Physics. NCCU a good place for any of those so I can tell what subjects I am probably going to study. Need a quick run down on how the program is actually run as the program description is very sparse(as in class, research, projects, life, quick run down). I need to be able to compare it to Duke Tip West:Physics of Energy Program. And if any of you would like to make that comparison…Thanks! Final question does anyone ever recycle the project from SVSM into a science competition??? Really curious about that. Thanks!

SVSM-free Duke-$$$
Is Duke Tip for credit?
If not then I would probably do SVSM because it encompasses research even though it’s a non-credit program.

Alright. THanks for the response. Yeah I just wanted to check out whether SVSM was actually worth it.

Alternate at ECU; heard a lot of great things about summer ventures at ECU from my friend who attended last year. Really hoping that I can get in. Is it a good idea to attach a letter expressing my interest ?

Anybody get into NCCU?

@dukehopeful: The Duke TIP program is a “way your way in program” anyone with money and decent grades will be accepted, hardly any prestige with it. Go to summer ventures, of the kids the applied to Duke from the campus I attended, 6 out of 8 were accepted.

^ yeah that is what I am doing.

Didn’t even catch that typo, it should be “pay your way.”

@dukehopeful: Good choice! You won’t regret it.

has anyone heard anything about the waitlist? when do we find out if we got in?

Last year, our child got off of the waitlist sometime in early May. You can call the site you are assigned to, tell them that you are still interested and ask if they have any notion of whether you will get a spot. Our child did so and was told to sit tight and that an acceptance would likely arrive before the end of may…and indeed it did.
