Summer Visits

My son intends to go to the soccer camp at Emory over the summer and try to get in a tour of the school while he's there. What will be available to see at that time, and what should he try to see on his own while he's there?
We are living overseas right now and are not available to come during the school year.

Parent of an Emory junior, here. I live in Atlanta, too. Summer is not an ideal time to see Emory. It is uncomfortably hot and, of course, there are few students here. Getting an idea of the campus is more than seeing the buildings, the environment and talking to the tour guides, which is what one is able to do over the summer. For the students that are here, go the the Dobbs University Center (DUC–Emory’s version of a student Union) to chat up some students. Take a campus tour, of course. Finding students in areas that he is interested in might be hard but would help a lot if he can find them. If he is at Emory for some time, he will no doubt get to see some of Atlanta. There are a multitude of things to see but also GREAT possibilities for internships. My son has been working at Turner Broadcasting since his freshmen year. Unfortunately, one tends to need a car in Atlanta. So, if he doesn’t have one, it will be tougher to see the sights. Finally, if he is interested in going to Emory, Emory puts a great deal of emphasis on ‘demonstrated interest.’ Make sure he goes to the Admissions office and signs up for the tour there, gets on the Email list and picks up the literature from there.

The reality is that most of us visit colleges during the summer. They have tours and you can talk to the tour guides about the college and see the campus. However, most of the students are not there.

We just do the best we can, and I found summer visits to be helpful and worthwhile. An on-campus program is even better for getting a sense of the place.

At Emory specifically, they have student “lobby hosts” in the admissions office and you can can have conversations with them. It’s a good way to get a feel for the student body.

Wow, obviously I was deceived by the large tour groups that I start seeing as early as February.
