Hello. I'm back again with the time for applying to summer programs upon us. After attending Boston Conservatory VCI last summer, and knowing for sure that she wants to do vocal performance, my daughter is currently applying to the classical voice/opera/vocal performance programs at Tanglewood, Interlochen and Walnut Hill.

I would like her to also consider Washington National Opera's program, possibly Oberlin and Brevard.

Any insight into any of these programs would be so welcome. And I'd love to know when your kids get accepted to these various programs and why they chose one over another.

Thanks a bunch! I look forward to "chatting" with everyone.

Over a period of time, programs and experiences can change. There may be very current news some will know about each program you are considering.
Nevertheless, most programs/sponsoring organizations do have an extensive history/alums/websites w/links, photos, rep etc. and CC has had threads/posts you should research.
Interlochen’s solo vocal program was very strong in our opinion. Rep, faculty, overall experience. Interlochen has a long history and many strong facets.

I never attended the Oberlin summer program but I was in Oberlin during the camp and sat in on a few of their classes. It seems like a really great program and my friends that did it really enjoyed it. I sat in on a great class on analyzing and creating a character within an aria. They also had a great guest recital at the beginning of the camp.

I am applying for five programs (Tanglewod and Eastman submitted, and I’m also applying to Brevard, Eastman, and BoCo VCI in case I don’t get in to either of the first two). I can’t give any input on how the programs are because I have never been, but seeing that you are interested in Brevard, I was wondering if you or anyone else had information on them, more than what is on their website. I feel like their website isn’t as informative as the others, and I haven’t heard from anyone who has been there before for voice. Good luck to your daughter, maybe I’ll meet her this summer!

ivatour, you may want to PM POTOMOM. I believe her D attended Walnut Hill and the Washington National Opera Program. Her D is now a student at Oberlin. My S attended the Oberlin summer program and had a wonderful experience there. This is a thread where I explained my S’s experience with the program to someone else who was interested.

Hope this helps and good luck!

We just got an email yesterday that my d was accepted for the Interlochen Vocal Soloist Summer program. We have 2 weeks to respond! We are waiting on tanglewood and Walnut Hill Scholarship decisions.

Has anyone ever asked for more time so you can make a decision based on other acceptances too?

The year my D went to Walnut Hill Summer Opera she got an email on March 19 about the scholarship. Don’t know if that helps you, but you can always pick up the phone, call and explain your situation.

We had this problem just two weeks ago (you can read about it on the Summer 11 thread.) I agree with PotoMom. Call or email the programs you’re waiting for and explain your situation. Call or email Interlochen and ask for an extension. It never hurts to ask. What you want to avoid is accepting one program and then canceling on them if something “better” comes through.

Did anyone else hear back either way from Interlochen Solo Vocalist program?
Please post here whenever you do hear back from them or any others!!
thanks so much

p.s. it is terribly confusing to know what each of these programs is like, how they differ, which ones are the hardest to get into, what their strengths and weaknesses are. so please continue sharing any of your experiences!!

We got acceptance for Interlochen Vocal soloist program on Monday, 3/7 for vocal soloist program.

Waiting on Walnut hill and Tanglewood. I did email and ask for an extension for Interlochen b/c they wanted a response by 3/21. Asked for 3/31. Tanglewood says they expect to have answers out on or about 3/24, if not sooner. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Good luck to everyone!

My D got acceptance from Walnut Hill today for the summer opera program. We wait until 3/15 to find out who won the scholarship.

Now waiting on tanglewood.

I think everyone is waiting on Tanglewood! I know I am.

lvautour, I sang in the HS Voice Program at Brevard in the summer of '09, and I loved it. It attracts serious musicians, and the campus is beautiful. One of the best things about Brevard is the total music immersion. You don’t just spend time with vocalists (don’t worry, you do plenty of that) but it is highly encouraged for students to arrange a flash concert (impromptu at a location in the town) with students from other divisions (ie, vocal students with instrumentalists, or having the composition students write for you.)

Also, the season concerts are very, very worth attending and student attendence is very high. When I was there I met the pianist Olga Kern, and last summer they had Frederica von Stade. This summer, Yo-Yo Ma is returning and he will do masterclasses open to every student.

There are over 250 practice facilities, and about 150 of them are equipped with Steinway grands. These are small (nice) rooms scattered over the campus.

Last year I was accepted to Interlochen in mid-March, but instead chose to sing in a smaller festival on Martha’s Vineyard. This summer, I was accepted to the Bel Canto Institute which is 4 works in Florence, Italy. I have also applied to Tanglewood; just waiting to hear if I’ve been accepted.

Hope some of this helps, and good luck!

We are still waiting for Tanglewood vocals as well. D was accepted at Interlochen, Walnut Hill, & Washington Nat’l Opera…and everyone has offered some $$, - which really only comes to about 20%, but anything helps as these programs are very expensive.

She is also going to put in for BC, Eastman and possibly IU…they have later acceptance dates than the other 4.

They all seem wonderful…so the decision won’t be easy -.

we just requested an extension from Interlochen, while we wait for BUTI and make decisions…it looks like some have heard from Buti in the last couple of days, but nothing to my D yet…

ps

we are in Houston visiting Rice…what a lovely music program/facilities they have…D definitely wants to apply in the fall!

We received word on Tanglewood this week and that is where my daughter is going to go. She is incredibly excited. One of the kids she went to Boston Conservatory with last summer was accepted as well, so that’s kind of cool.

Anyone else heard from them? We can hook them up on Facebook.

yes, D is also going to Tanglewood…she was accepted at all the camps, but according to the CC posts I have read, Tanglewood is an excellent choice for the summer between junior & senior HS year!

Interlochen is an excellent program. My D is a high school student there in the vocal program. Because of that, we decided to look outside of IAA for the summer to give her some variety. She will be attending Walnut Hill this summer and is very excited. We were looking for someone who might have attended to share any experiences? She is also interested in Tanglewood for the next summer and I would be interested in any feedback there too. Thanks!

Hey
Did anyone accept the acceptance from estern music festival(orchestra program)??

operafairy,

The year my DD went to WHS summer program she got to attend an opera with 20,000 in attendance while they were in Italy…she came home and said “that’s what I want to do”…she also did a little panhandling in the streets of Verona…all in all a great experience for her…and yes…she even learned a little something.
