Summer Volunteer Suggestions?

I'm REALLY rural, and I need some volunteering suggestions for this summer. I need some community service hours--does anybody have any suggestions? Internships and the like are out-there's nothing like that available around here. Help.

That's a good question. :]

i volunteered at my local SPCA. Perhaps there's some sort of animal shelter near you to volunteer.

i'm sure a REALLY rural area has a church nearby.. i don't know what people do in church but people volunteer in church so yeah..

what about just tutoring little ones...for free...........?

doesn't your school have a community service group like interact club or somehting? they always have something to offer.

and even if it's rural, you guys must have like a hospital nearby. or even those family doctor places ( i dunno what they're called).. you could just help out with them?

and maybe you could start something in your area. like ring up a big branch place like those cancer fundraising/breast cancer fundraising/child cancer/ummmmm somethings about trees or something/red cross.. you get the idea? the charity places.. and then tell them you'd like to set up a group in your area to fundraise. and you could (with their permission) set up a thing where people go around collecting money/anything to raise money. -- yeah leadership thing which is a plus.

NoFX gave some great suggestions. Try checking out the websites of the American Cancer Society, Students Working Against Tobacco, UNICEF (<a href="http://www.unicefusa.org)%5B/url%5D">www.unicefusa.org)</a>, etc. and start a club at your school or set up a community walk (people get pledges/sponsored to walk and the money raised is donated to the charity specified). As NoFX said, this is an awesome way to get community service hours while really helping a worthy organization, AND developing (and showing colleges) your leadership skills.

the library....which hopefully you have out there?

About 15 miles away, but only about 15 books, but it might be worth a shot.

....15 books??...... my house could be a library

That was a slight exaggeration, but seriously, it's tiny.

Do you want to neccessarily stay in your town? there are great opportunities to go abroad for community service with organizations like AFS. I did volunteer work with them in Costa Rica. Lots of fun and rewarding. You might want to consider it. They also have scholarships available if money is an issue.
