Any advice for parents attending Summer Welcome? Are there special programs for us?

Yes, summer welcome has presentations designed just for parents and just for students and then both combined. The kids break off into their own little groups, which they stay in all day. If there is a parent and student presentation, they then return to the same group. The parents part is very mellow. If you don't feel a need to go to a particular presentation, it won't be noted if you skip it. I wasn't sure I was going to go, but did after all. I was glad I had that time to spend with my D up at Mizzou.

Thanks. I mostly want someone to tell me how to pay the bills and what else we need to do before move-in! And I want to see the dorm room in real life and have a chance to see the campus in a less hurried way.

Unless there's a big interest in Mizzou on CC in the coming year, you and I might have our own private forum. ;) We are looking forward to the trip for SW, though it will be really quick (and tiring). We'll have a couple more days in St. Louis with family when we go back in August.

Hi Geezermom - My son will be starting at Mizzou this fall. We will be attending summer welcome June 18 and 19. He is very excited - I am excited and a little sad (he is my oldest). Is your student a boy or a girl? Where is he/she living?

My son is my only, so I hear you! He's living in Schurz Hall in a journalism honors FIG. His summer welcome is July 6-7--kind of late in the schedule, so I hope he gets classes he wants. He's signed up for two courses through the FIG; he's skipping the third FIG course due to AP credit. Last night he was online checking his schedule (no morning classes yet!) and looking up his professors. So yes, he's excited, too.

Hey guys, any updates about how your kids are enjoying Mizzou next year would be very beneficial for those of us who are considering attending. Sorry that I won't let you guys have your private forum. :)

I will keep you updated, Steelerfan. My daughter will be a senior next year (my two children are going off to college one right after the other) and is thinking of joining her brother at Mizzou. My son will be living in Gillett in a journalism FIG. He did not get directly admitted to the journalism progam - he missed the ACT score by one point - so he will have to apply after his sophomore year (I think I have that right). We are attending summer welcome next Wednesday and Thursday.

Don't worry, Steelerfan--we'll keep you posted. I'm glad to know others are interested in Mizzou so it won't be so lonely in this corner of CC! Tort, let us know how Summer Welcome goes for you.

I will! He has to be there early Wednesday morning so we will leave Tuesday (we live in a suburb of Chicago). We'll be home late Thursday night.

Okay - here's the update. I was very impressed with how well organized summer welcome was. With the size of the upcoming freshman class, I wasn't sure what to expect. The first day is LONG! I overheard one incoming freshman tell her mom that it was the longest day of her life. My son enjoyed most of it but he did think some parts were long and boring. The parent sessions were informative but it was long for us, too. You will have a packed first day with sessions scheduled from 8 AM until 9 PM. The second day is much more relaxed. Other than the mandatory meeting with an advisor to set up next fall's schedule, you can pretty much pick and choose what you want to do. We were on our way home by 1. If you have any questions, let me know.

^^Thanks. We'll get to bed early the night before the first day! Then maybe we'll be able to catch an earlier flight home. We're looking forward to it (July 6-7). Did your son get the classes he wanted? Did he see his dorm room--or at least one like it?

He did get the classes he wanted. His advisor is great! He starts at 9 every day. I don't think he is overly thrilled with that but it's better than starting at 8 and this way he has free time in the afternoon. Hopefully, he will use it for studying. He stayed in a room similar to his and it is very small. Right now he is trying to decide if he wants to join a frat. I wish they didn't move their freshman into the frat houses right away. Too many decisions to make before he even gets down there.

tort--I sent you a PM. We went to a party yesterday afternoon, and it was great to hear my S talking about his college plans with friends and family. He's excited.

Also looking forward to updates through-out the years...my S (HS class of 2010) is looking at Mizzou for journalism. Thanks for sharing.

Summer Welcome was very well-organized, tiring, and hot, but we learned everything we needed to know. Three things stand out:
--Mizzou seems efficient; they really try to minimize the big-school atmosphere by making things easy for you. My S has his schedule, has ordered books, etc., so he's ready to go.
--I'm impressed with the Honors College (advising, availability of classes, accessibility of staff, etc.).
--The journalism school gets even better with every encounter. This time, I liked their no-nonsense advice to directly admitted students: Hit the ground running, because there's no room for slacking off. At the same time, they're extremely supportive of their students.

helloo...im glad to have stumbled upon this thread. im one of 2 students in my grade planning on majoring in journalism/communcations, and its hard to find information since my counselor isn't very useful (i think the only journalism school he's ever heard of is Medill, wayyy out of my league).

i've just found out about Mizzou when another parent posted on my thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/534349-can-you-narrow-down-my-college-list-looking-communication-journalism-programs.html today. i'd appreciate if anyone can offer me some helpful info on my thread (it has stats and stuff). I'm a rising senior and common app is already out =(.

if anyone has information on Mizzou, keep this thread updated as well! i will probably be dropping by a couple of times like steelerfan513. glad to see that there are more than just prospective doctors, lawyers, engineers, and CEOs, on CC. :)

i'm going to mizzou next year. i'm from california and i NEVER thought i would go to the midwest. 20091990, it is very easy to get into mizzou. At the information session, i believe (don't quote me on this) that all one needs is a 24 on the ACT to get in. For the journalism school, it is a 29 ACT or a 1280 SAT. However, being in the j school as a freshman (as opposed to the College of A&S) really does not make a difference. It just means you don't have to apply to the J school your junior year. I'm part of the honors college, which is basically the top 10% of the school (an honors college advisor said there was around 2800 people in the honors college, which is 10% of 28,000.) To qualify for that, you need a 29 ACT/1280 SAT and be in the top 10% of your class. However, if you meet only one of the above mentioned criteria then you can write an essay and you will most likely be accepted. I'm not really sure what you want to know. Social life? At my orientation session, i saw everyone from super dorky computer nerds to stoner jocks to bottle blondes to emo/scene kids. There really is someone for everyone at mizzou, because of the size (21000 w/o grad school, 2008 freshman class is 7000.) The average person is white, from missouri, good looking and friendly. The campus is large and beautiful in my opinion. Columbia is a great college town apparently. There is a large number of international (asian) students studying at mizzou.
Again, if you specify what you want to know about, I can probably tell you more. Good luck in your search process :)

PS: The application took me about 30 minutes to complete. It is ridiculously easy, they don't ask for teacher recs... It only costs $40 and from your stats, you would be automatically in.

icierair, it's good to have an incoming Mizzou student on this thread. (My son sees CC as my weird thing, so I don't think he'll show up here!) Keep posting!

icierair, I'd definitely like to hear about your experiences at Mizzou throughout next year. I might drop you a PM every once in a while if you don't mind.

icierair - I'm entering Mizzou this fall too, and also in the Honors college. Right now, I'm majoring/minoring in Philosophy/Spanish and I'm also pre-med. Journalism is my second option, and based on what you said, applying to the J-school from A&S wouldn't be a big deal? Obviously if I change my mind I'd be behind a few classes (or semesters lol)... but overall, think it's possible without too much stress?
