Is there a thread listing audition dates for current college MT students seeking summer work or internships? Any input is appreciated whether by listing individual summer stock auditions or unified style auditions.
I haven’t seen a thread re: summer work for this year, but here is a thread from last year –
Some unified auditions for summer stock, internships, or apprenticeships are: Midwest Theatre Auditions (MWTA), Straw Hats, Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC), and New England Theatre Conference (NETC). Students who will graduate this year and available for year-round work can attend the Unified Professional Theatre Auditions (UPTA).
Companies often also hold local auditions. f you have questions about any of these auditions, ask away!
Other auditions: All-in-One Conference (A1), SETC Outdoor Theatre (formerly Institute for Outdoor Theatre auditions). There are also state theatre associations that hold auditions. Some of those are: Ohio Theatre Alliance (OTA), Illinois Theatre Auditions (ITA), New Hampshire Professional Theatre Association (NHPTA), Florida Professional Theatre Association (FPTA).
@ohmtmom - Pretty thorough info above^. Just be aware that many of these audition deadlines have already passed/closed for the upcoming summer. There are a couple still open but they close soon. So if interested- may want to get on the applications right away.
Several theatre’s also hold their own auditions. Usually it will be on their webpage. I know Music Theatre Wichita’s audition applications just went live last week. Wagon Wheel, The Lex and Lyric in OKC hold auditions around the country.
A number of these auditions stipulate that people trying out must be 18 or older. Are there any summer auditions open for 17 and younger?
@Twelfthman - Not that I have seen for these types of generals, no. They are geared toward students who have already completed their first year of college (and above).
@Twelfthman My daughter turned 17 during her freshman year at college. She applied to StrawHats and NETC with a special request to allow her to audition since she would have finished one year of college before the summer season, but would only be 17. StrawHats made an exception for her, but NETC did not. My D got cast that summer, but that was the only summer she chose to do summer stock. Otherwise, I think a 17 year old still enrolled in HS would not be seen at these audition events.
As an aside (not pertaining to summer stock), I think age 17 is a difficult age to be cast in professional theater, because they can find actors 18 and over who can portray teen roles and not have to deal with the extra issues that underage actors entail.
