I got a e-mail about a summer program at Princeton in which AP Goverment and Politics will be taught which students also get to know the school. If I get selected to take that program, does that affect my application for Princeton next year? If is does, even if I am going to do my major in something realted to science?

the general response is no, but making a presence surely never hurt anyone.

If you take AP Gov and Politics, you'll better know the federal bureaucracy, which will certainly help you grab those government grants in your future science career :).

I don't really understand. Can you explain that?

Hey, peace_world, was the email from Princeton's program itself?

well, there were other Ivies to choose from too... Like I think there was Yale, U of Penn, etc... I don't think it was directly from Princeton.
I got a letter in the mail for info to apply.

I think you are talking about Junior State of America (JSA), which has programs at Princeton, Yale, and some other places. They are not affiliated with Princeton and so there will be no direct effect on your application. Of course, you could talk about it as another experience in an essay though...

I actually went to the JSA Summer School at Princeton in 2004. It is a wonderful program if you like government/politics. Also, students who go to the program probably get a boost in admissions for showing interest. For example, of the students who went to the program with me and were rising seniors at the time, about 5-10 of them got into Princeton. I was a sophomore when I went and I am now a senior and I am going to Princeton in the fall. I know numerous other students who went to the program in other years and were later admitted to the university. I wrote my long essay about the experience to highlight my participation in the program and how it helped me to develop a love for Princeton. I think that if you already have the scores, grades, and activities for Princeton to be a realistic option, this is a hook that could def. push you over the top. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the program because I absolutely loved it and would be willing to tell you everything you need to know.

Yes, I agree. Though I would not characterize it as a "hook" (I don't think it had that much of an effect), I attended JSA Princeton 2005 and was admitted to Princeton a year later. It is an experience that potentially yields a lot of good essay material, which is probably where the greatest application boost comes from (though you still have to make use of it yourself).

But I want to emphasize that it is not a "ticket" to Princeton. So I say go only if you want the experience anyway (spending so much time and money is not worth it if you are only looking for an admissions boost).

well, I don't really like government/politics. I am thinking of majoring in some type of science related subjects... so I don't think writing about that experience would help. or would it? I want to go because I want to see Princeton, and see the city. I think it would help me really decide if I really want to go there. ...no I actually take that back. I really want to go to Princeton. I want to see it before I am a college freshman so I know how it looks, etc. and I think those who take this program at Princeton over the summer probably want to go there, so I also get to see those "talented" ppl. LOL

I like doing things that I am not good at/or don't like so that I will start to like it a little bit, and see the good side of it, if you understand what I mean. Thats also why I want to go.

I think my grades, etc are pretty good...but I am kind of scared. yeah, so you know, I thought taking this summer program would help me get accepted.

hey, can it also count as AP gov/pol credit??

yeah--some high schools will give you course credit and it prepares you fairly well for the ap gov/pol exam if you take it seriously (i got a 5)
