Summer

I think it depends on your instrument. D is also waitlisted for flute, but they only accept 6 flutes to their program. We were told there is dozens on the waitlist, but not sure if that is TOTAL number, or just flutes. We were also told there is no particular order to the waitlist.
We are still waiting on Tanglewood and Interlochen.

NYSMF has a flute intensive program now!!!!!!!! Filling out the application and sending it in. It looks very impressive....anyone know anything about the flute program here? How about Carnegie? Thank you!!

I went to Hartwick music festival summer 2005, which the next year relocated to NYSMF, retaining the same faculty and programs. I have heard that the flute teachers there were very helpful and great musicians. If you want to know more, I can direct you to some friends of mine who actually studied flute in 2005. There are many msm and juilliard precollege kids that attend the festival, as well as many beginners. The average age would be late middle school through high school. College age is quite old for the program, even though they say "ages 10-25". I believe that this is the first year they have the international flute program, so I guess nobody really knows too much about it

Anyone hear from Tanglewood yet?? :)

I was told that the letters will go out "the first week in April."

That is what we were also told. Not too anxious to see the letter since audition was not even close to d's potential, but time was a factor. There's always next year since she is young!! She has applied to other programs that looks very good for the summer, so she is keeping her head up. Luck to all......

DS was notified by email that he got the lone tuba spot for Tanglewood. Good luck to the rest of those who applied.

BTW- I think all others will be notified by mail.

Thanks for the info, Momnipotent, DS is also waiting to hear. Love your screen name. Hope I spelled it right. One of my mom's nicknames was Mighty Mother which is kind of the same thing. Congratulations to your Tuba son! DS was already accepted into vocal performance for a BM at BU from the same live audition with about 22K in merit grants. Should I feel confident he will be offered a place at BUTI?

Thanks for the update Momnipotent, and congrats to your son! My D (violin) is waiting to hear from BUTI as well; she's in at New York State Summer School of the Arts/ School of Orchestral Studies, which she's done for the last two years, so will have that good option if she's not accepted to Tanglewood.

Momnipotent-
From another tuba mom, congratulations to your TubaSon!
I've always thought it was 'unfair' that there is usually one slot for tuba......
versus ALL those flutes!
What an accomplishment.

Congrats on your acceptance!! We are still waiting.....yes, one of "all those flutes"....they may take more flutes than tubas, but from my d's past auditions, there are usually quite a few more flutes auditioning, which should make it a little more fair in the odds. I do appreciate the difficulty of playing a tuba, definately not doubting your child's incredible talent.....and to be selected as the only one!! Just had to stand up for my poor little flute/ piccolo player!! Not counting on a spot at Tanglewood BUTI...she was not happy with her audition and she knew she had to be right on her best for that one!! Besides, she did not recieve an e-mail today, so I guess they are sending out waitlist and rejections by snail mail????..... But, she is young and has more years ahead with other options for this summer.

mommybird-if there is not a spot for your DS at BUTI, you must let us know....a big CONGRATS to you!!!! What a wonderful acceptance with great merit grants! We went through the college auditions last year with my older d....very trying. But it all works out.
Enjoy and best wishes for a wonderful summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I'm going to BUTI again this summer and it should be just fantastic. The YAO is great - last summer we did some seriously fantastic repertoire and I'm sure this summer will be no different!

Good luck to all CC music students in their summer festival placements!

mommybird--two years ago, DS was in the same position as your son with a scholarship to BU awaiting word from BUTI. He was indeed accepted and spent a wonderful summer at Tanglewood.

This time, DD, a high school junior and a soprano is waiting, and it is an entirely different story.

Good luck, everyone! Congratulations to those of you who already know that you are in!

notfromme-
Whoops! My "all those flutes" comment wasn't meant seriously.
Having been through soooo many junior high, high school, college, summer auditions with our tuba son, we DO know what you say is true.
Many more flutes auditioning for many more openings......same odds as fewer tubas for fewer (or one) opening. I'm sorry if I offended a flutemom!

Best wishes to all applying.....

Gee...when DS was at BUTI, there was a tuba for the orchestra and another tuba (or maybe even two) for the YAWE (Young Artists Wind Ensemble). Isn't that still the case?

musicmom-
no offense taken!!!! The waiting is tiring....especially since we did this last year for my old d with college...and now summer camps for younger d (flutist) and summer stock for older d (MT major)!!!! We have absolutely no idea of what this summer holds...and I am faced with an empty nest...:( not ready for that at all!! But the worst thing that could happen is that neither one gets into anyplace....so very confusing!! I think pre-med is the way to go!! ;)

By the way- older daughter plays french horn, so that is why I can truly appreciate the fact that the harder the instrument is to play, the fewer there are at auditions!! Is this your s first summer at a camp? It will be ours.

Once again, wishing all these wonderful, talented musicians a magical summer....

thumper1-
my comments about 'one tuba' werent' in reference to BUTI.....our son hasn't attended there. But the ones he has attended have had one or at most two.

notfromme-
Wow, you have two kids possibly going in different directions this summer.....or not. The waiting must be not fun. I do hope they end up where they want to be......an empty nest for the summer might be fun??
Our son is a college junior and actually chose not to apply to a summer program this year. Will work, maybe pick up a course or two he needs at local CC. In past years he has done a local summer program at Drew University, NJ Governor's School of the Arts and Eastern Music Festival last summer.
He has enjoyed them all. He finds it so inspirational to be surrounded by high caliber teachers and serious music students!

Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone.

oops...that was momnipotent that made the "one tuba at BUTI" post. Sorry!!!

DD, a junior, applied to the Advanced Vocal program and was not accepted. However, they did accept her into the Advanced Choral and Operetta Program. How often does this happen? Have any of you had experience with this program? Was it fun? Is there an obvious hierarchy in the programs? A friend of hers, now a graduating senior, did get into the Advanced Vocal Program last year, so D is disappointed that she did not make the cut. She is excited and grateful to be accepted by Interlochen, but she does not know what to make of this.
