The Princeton supplement reads:
Please tell us how you have spent the last two summers (or vacations between school years), including any jobs you have held, if not already detailed on the Common Application.

Does this mean that I should give no detail about my summer job? In my resume I briefly mention that I work over the summer as a lifeguard (30hrs/week), and my job is certainly the primary commitment of my summer. It just feels awkward to not describe my job when it consumes most of my summer. How should I respond?

I would include it in your essay- it says “if not already detailed”, and it sounds like you gave a minimal explanation on that section of the commonapp (which is to be expected). I know that I included everything I did over the summer, including summer jobs for which I had already given brief explanations in other parts of the commonapp.

Better safe than sorry is what I think. Of course, I’m only an applicant, so I can’t say for sure! good luck :)

I’m in a similar situation as the OP. I just listed it on my activity list, but do plan to write about it on the Supplement.

To branch off the original question just slightly, what exactly is Princeton expecting for this answer? Is it just a paragraph with the basic details and some reflection? Should it be longer, deeper, etc?

Just looking to see how different people have handled this question.

I almost filled out the character limit. I wrote a decent amount of detail about the few main events of my summer and then did the same for the next summer, and ended it. I figure that’s what they expect.

^I see what you did there. And no, it wasn’t.

Thanks to the rest of you; I’ll be sure to give the details about my work. @ccuser18- I would imagine that this section should be rather straightforward. Only if you experienced something that was really eye-opening over the summer would I suggest writing “deeply” about the experience.

I’m sure you saved a lot of time posting that, as opposed to just answering my question. Or better yet (if you’re really pressed for time), you could merely refrain from posting. What a novel idea.

I also have a question about this section. The majority of my previous summer was spent at a summer program, which I decided to write about in the additional information section of the common app. So, should i just write about the preceding summer, and just wrap it up by mentioning the summer program I attended (without going into detail, since they don’t want you to be repetitive)?

It seems that if you already went into detail on the program earlier in your app, you should just mention it, possibly referring the adcom to where you previously discussed the experience.

Just rewrite everything again (preferably in hexameter). Princeton admissions officers love repetition. They just love repetition. Repetition is loved by Princeton admissions officers.
