SUNY Albany Class of 2020 Decision Thread

Hey Guys!! I thought I would make this thread because UAlbany has began sending out admissions decision for the class of 2020! I have included a format to share admissions decisions and stats. Fill out as much as you can to help others. Hopefully this thread will help you with all of the anxiousness that comes with the college application season. Feel free to ask questions about the admissions process and school because I’ve done a lot of research! Good luck to everyone

Hi Nick,

I look at alot of the websites and I see the averages, means etc, however, since you have do alot of research as well, I would like to know what you really do need gpa wise and also sat wise to comfortably get in to Albany these days. My son is still in high school, he will be a jr next year, but time goes by fast and he thinks he wants to give business a shot.

Albany has a direct admit program for their business program. I am not sure what you are going for but if you have any info on that program, that would be great. I did research myself and I see you need a gpa of 90 and sat of 1200, however, there is a sliding scale, and that is not written in stone.

Good Luck!!

My son got the letter yesterday, he is very happy

Note: We visited Albany twice, because he wants to study physics the 2nd visit was to a Physics professor that also showed him the labs, not sure if these visits influenced in the decision, but for my Son were very determine to pick Albany as one of his top schools. BTW Albany and the professor were very accommodating to my son request, I personally valued that.

@euve69, Look at the [SUNY Admissions Information Summary](https://www.suny.edu/media/suny/content-assets/documents/summary-sheets/Admissions_qf_stateop.pdf) to get the mid-50% ranges for GPA and SAT at Albany. The [Common Data Set](http://www.albany.edu/ir/cds/cds_2014_15/freshman.htm) may also be helpful.

According to the CDS, the 75th percentile score for CR was 580, and for math it was 600. Only 8.5% had ACT scores of 30 or above, and 14% had GPA of 3.75 or higher. I think that the closer your son is to the 75th percentile scores, the better chance he has.

@euve69 Thank you for your reply! I am happy to say I was accepted into Albany class of 2020, and my stats were lower than the published stats. I personally applied as a Political Science major, because I want to pursue a political major and go on to law school afterwards. I had a 86.33 average and a 1090 combined Critical Reading and Math score. I personally think what differentiated me as an applicant were my extracurricular activities, personal statement, and my strong letter of recommendation. I was the captain of the Mock Trial team, which was a team in the Top 8 out of over 150 schools in New York City, I was an oralist for the Moot Court team, writer for a student written law journal, and pretty much immersed in activities that demonstrated my specific passion – law. My personal statement was very original because it spoke about my experiences as a child actor on tv, broadway, and film. I spoke about my most recent role in the Netflix show, “Orange is the New Black”. I think this helped me stand out as a candidate for admissions into the school. I also had a very strong letter of recommendation that spoke about me very highly and also talked about my talents and skills. After reading it, I knew it was a good strong letter of recommendation to be sent to college. Even though my average and SAT score were below the average I think I was looked at as a whole for admissions and I am very glad I was admitted because UAlbany is one of my top choices.

As for the direct admit into UAlbany’s business program, my best friend was admitted into it this year. He had a 92 average with honors/ap classes and an 1110 combined Reading and Math score, so with a 90 average and 1200 SAT you should have no problem being admitted into the business program directly as a freshman.

We both applied early action to UAlbany because it was a top choice for both of us and we were very eager to get a decision from them. Good luck to your son and it is very good he is preparing early. I was on the forums during my junior year so I was prepared what to expect during the college admissions process!

Good luck!
Nick

Nick,

Congrats!! I am happy for you. I love Albany, it is an excellent school for Business and Pre Law. Good Luck!! By the way, my wife loves “Orange is teh New Black” she is hooked. If you do not mind, what character did you play?? Anyway, best of luck to you!

@euve69 Thank you very much! I am Emiliano on “Orange is the New Black”, Dayanara’s little brother. I am in season 3 more. You might remember the episode where the kid doesn’t want to eat the soggy french fries, and his dad pulls out a gun. That’s me!!

How many of you will actually go to Albany, my Son is 80% sure this is his school

@NYdad2014 I feel very confident that Albany is my school. After doing a lot of research online and visiting the school, I am pretty certain that I will end up at Albany. I was recently accepted to Cortland too. What does your son want to major in at Albany?

My son was accepted yesterday!!!

GPA : 91 weighted
CR:620 Math 660

Honors classes, 2 college courses senior year, musical instrument and a varsity sport

He applied to be a Business major and wondering if the letter should have stated that he was accepted to the actual Business School. They offered him presidential scholarship. Did anyone’s letter actually say they were admitted to the Business School.

L

@cantwait100 Congratulation to your son! My friends letter mentioned how he was admitted directly to the business school. My friend also did not receive a presidential scholarship because he had lower SAT scores.

My son is either physics or computer science/math

Hey guys!

Congrats on everyone getting into the University at Albany. I am currently a senior and I love the school! I am an accounting major.

The University is making some major renovations and it is going to look awesome! These renovations should be done by next semester; I am so excited to see how it looks!

Let me know if you guys have any questions! Go Great Danes!

Does anyone know if the housing application is open yet? Like if they are already giving out priority numbers?

I just got accepted and I was wondering if anyone’s letters clarified what major/program they were accepted into? My letter just says congratulations without stating anything about my major (I applied for biology). Should I be worried? Any help would be appreciated!

Did anybody receive any other material than the acceptance letter and the deposit slip? Binghamton and Buffalo (the other 2 that accepted my son) provided credential and dates for New students meeting. While my son likes Albany he is a little discourage that the other 2 Universities provided more information and Albany nothing.
