SUNY and Covid vax mandates

How does SUNY still mandating their Covid vaccine affect whether you will attend or not?

I find it worrisome they are still requiring it. RIT just eliminated it and there are efforts to push SUNY to do same.

Whether you are for it or against it, this is about requiring children to do something that in Feb 7th the president just declared is no longer a threat.

My S is accepted at Binghamton but have no plans to attend unless the mandate is dropped.

How is requiring the covid vaccine different than requiring the MMR and meningitis vaccines (which I think all SUNYs also require)?

This is not a debate on the vaccine itself, this is the thread about how it influences your decision to attend SUNY schools. Please stay on topic or you will be flagged

I think most schools in the country still require it. Many employers do too. Colleges also require many other vaccines in order to move into the dorms. Do you think all vaccine requirements should be eliminated or just covid? I don’t think we have any pandemics now but still lots of required vaccines. The purpose, as I understand it , is to prevent something from becoming a pandemic. There are problems now in some communities with children not getting vaccinated for measles and so measles is coming back. I guess I have no problem with requiring vaccines.

Well, you did change the question you initially asked.

Colleges need to keep their students safe, and requiring vaccines helps them to do that, so I support it and would not hesitate to attend a school that requires it. I recognize that some feel differently, and fortunately there are plenty of schools that don’t require the covid vaccine.

The question didn’t change I clarified it a bit yes but I never asked for a comparison of Covid vaccine to other vaccines as you suggested. I asked what is your opinion on SUNY requiring it and your attendance.

Please limit responses to the OP’s question:

There are other threads to discuss general college requirements or rationale for the vaccine or efficacy of the vaccine or just about any other topic. Additionally, as this thread is outside the politics forum, political discussion is prohibited per Terms of Service

Covid (and other vaccine) mandates increase our interest in a school and would be the opposite of a deterrent, for us.

Agreed! My daughter got into Bing EA and the vaccine requirement is a plus for us!

Reminder that CC is supposed to be a friendly and welcoming place. Let us cut out the snark please.

To avoid baiting a political discussion (but then decrying one) by setting up a false premise, please do use an accurate (factual) quote. The actual sentence in the State of the Union Address on Feb 7 had been:

COVID no longer controls our lives

Lightening doesn’t control my life, but it certainly remains a threat. Thus I continue to support the use of lightening rods by colleges.

My direct, obvious answer to your question is, that I absolutely expect all colleges to mandate readily available vaccines against dangerous, easily transmissable viruses.

I already did. And there really is no need to reinforce the message I already posted. TIA

A two second google search found this:

To date I don’t see any changes announced.

Notice that if this thread becomes a political discussion it will be closed.

Stick to the original question if it would impact your student choosing a SUNY school.

covid ruined my daughter’s senior year of HS and her 1st year of college. Yes, there are bigger tragedies in life, but she’s my daughter and it makes me sad that she will never get those years back.
I am 100% in favor of mandating vaccines if it can help prevent more lost years of my kid’s youth. Now moving to online classes, closed dining halls and dorms…that I have a bigger problem with.

I understand that some parents are at odds with vaccinations (none of them require a pandemic to exist or have existed) and how they face difficult choices for their own child.

Specially with transmissible viruses, any vaccination decision impacts their own child, but also other people’s children who come in contact with their child.

I would counsel my child not to apply to a SUNY (or any other university) if they didn’t follow public health guidelines.

I never suggested that - and it’s not related to your topic.

I would strongly prefer to send my child to a college which has a vaccine mandate in place. The pandemic may be declared over but covid is still around.

It was a response to your clarification supposedly On the state of union quote that is not related to this topic. Do you have a child who has applied to or is attending SUNY?
