University of Oswego, can somebody tell me anything about it?I plan to apply there but I dont know anything about the college.Does it have good business program(finance)? What about jobs?Is it hard to find job in NYC or any other big city since the college in located next to great lakes in small town?Help me out here please

bump..........

The campus location looks so cool. Do they take advantage of being right on the lake?

What programs is it known for?

(What's the nearest airport?)

hey i just got accepted to oswego and im pumped!
wondering what the radiology major is like there and how hard it is to get into.
also what is there to do around campus, whats the student body like?
is the winter really that bad there?

Was a student (till I transferred due to major) years ago.

Campus is very nice. Easy to get around.

We swam in the lake in Sept. Ice skate outdoors on the lagoon all winter.

I hear the town has improved tremendously (in comparison to what was there.) There was little in town for nightlife so we mostly socialized in the dorms, etc. I did remain one summer to take a class and volunteer at the local hospital. There is definitely more to the town than you see riding down the main street.

I think kids are generally happy. Many snow days where classes are canceled for snow or wind. Plowing was good so you didn't have to dredge through any snow on the way to classes. Basically, you need good cold winter attire- hats/gloves/scares and boots. Inside is nice and toasty. Layering is key.

thanks for the reply crazed, much appreciated.
but a couple more ?'s.
Is a car necessary to get around or is everything generally within walking distance?
I hear its a big party school, is this true?

I can't tell you about needing a car.

Plenty of students have cars so you really don't need one yourself. It's not like you'll be getting off campus that often. If you don't have a car then no one will need to borrow it and you won't have to keep clearing off the snow!
There is a campus bus that takes you too and from town. Nothing was within walking distance when I was there, but I think that may have changed.

Tons of bars in town. Nightlife was mostly on campus but obviously kids do to town/bars on some nights. Remember though, the drinking age was 18 in NY when I was in school (they had "keg" parties in the dorms back then) so I'm sure that has changed too. Hopefully a current student can answer more questions for you.

Personally, if looking at a SUNY college I wouldn't rule it out. I only had positive experiences there.

thanks crazed great info

I was hoping to also find out more info on Oswego. Anyone else?

The bus also goes into Syracuse (airport, mall, and maybe one other stop) - but I believe it only goes into Syracuse on the weekends but not sure.

I live just outside of Oswego and my sister attends as a Physics major. They’re mainly known for their Earth Sciences, Accounting and Education departments. It has the reputation in the area of being one of the better schools in Upstate NY. I wouldn’t say it’s a party school but if you’re looking to go to a party, you could probably find one to go to.

I have to say, though. If you go to Oswego, make sure you can deal with the snow. Oswego gets hit very hard in the winter, and it can pile up to over your waist. A couple years ago in Fulton, a city not far from Oswego, the snow actually got over 6 feet and the entire area lost power for over a week in one storm.

The campus is right next to Nine Mile Point, and there are few places on campus where you can’t see the plant. I personally get kind of freaked out about it, but it’s harmless. If you want to walk into town, it’s only about a quarter of a mile in, and then there’s a a couple of restaurants and random businesses. Though, the campus is on the outskirts of the city on the historic side and to get to many places you’d have to take the bus.

I am currently a student at SUNY Oswego and I must say I’m not very happy with it. I find the professors to be unprofessional (with a few exceptions) and not very knowledgeable in their respective fields. The campus itself is pretty nice, when there isn’t 4 feet of snow on the ground. Social life within the confines of the campus is limited at best. The quad is pretty much just a slab of cement, so no one really wants to hang out there. I am personally seeking a degree in IR or Arabic and Middle eastern studies, both of those fields/departments here are limited. I won’t be attending next fall, I would rather save my money for a year and them go somewhere else.

However, you should go and visit. If you know anyone up here ask to stay with them for a weekend or something. While Oswego may not be my slice of pie it could be yours, it’s all about the individual. I will also inform you that this is only based on one years time here.

Goodluck in your decision!

After completing my first year at SUNY Oswego I’m going to have to retract my previous statement,it took time to grow on me but now I can’t wait to go back. CHeck it out.
