I am a high school senior who is in all APs and gets nearly straight A's. I am absolutely positive that I want to study computer science i just do not know where. These are the three schools that I have narrowed it down to given strength of program and cost. I am admittedly a little worried about the strength of the computer science program at all 3 of these schools and any insight anyone could offer on any of them would be amazing. I'm also looking to do an accelerated 5 year masters program and really would like a school with a nice campus and good social life. Any thoughts on which school offers the best computer science and has the campus and social life to match? Also I have already been accepted to all 3 and to both Uconn and Delaware with scholarship and am instate for SUNY Bing

My son found the UConn campus very attractive but isolated. There’s not much in Storrs, CT besides UConn! He loved Delaware–beautiful campus and a nice street near campus with lots of restaurants. He ended up feeling Delaware was too far from home (Mass.). He’s in engineering so we didn’t look at the computer science aspect. He didn’t look at Binghamton, so I can’t help you there.

What’s your net cost of attendance for each school after scholarships are taken into account? I know the SUNY’s are very reasonable for in-state students so you would have to get good scholarships from Delaware and UConn to make the cost equivalent. Will you have to borrow money to attend? What are your parents willing/able to pay? My gut feeling is that if UDel and UConn are significantly more than Bing and cost is an issue for you, it may make sense to go to Bing, assuming their compsci program isn’t drastically inferior to the other 2.

Hopefully other can comment on the compsci programs at these schools.

that’s what i’ve been hearing/seeing as well. I got about $12,500 a year to UConn which makes it about the same as Bing and i don’t know how much from Delaware exactly yet but they said it would be significant. My parents would like to keep it within the bing range so around $20,000. I’d love to hear some more about the computer science program in specific. thanks so much!

Did you apply to Stony Brook?

UConn probably has the most vibrant social scene out of those three, but as others have mentioned, is extremely isolated. A very pretty school though, and lots of school spirit with their athletic teams (basketball in particular). Binghamton isn’t quite as pretty, but is a good school, I know they’re strong in the sciences, but I’m not sure about their comp sci program. I don’t know much about Delaware.

i didn’t apply to stony brook because I’m from long island and want to get off the island for school

Stony Brook, then Buffalo, are generally regarded as the top SUNYs for computer science.

The three schools you mention should be fine academically, as they all have ABET accreditation in computer engineering; Binghamton and Connecticut also have ABET accreditation for computer science. Delaware does not have ABET accreditation for computer science, but its course listing has a good selection of important courses for computer science majors. However, you may have to be more aggressive at seeking employers for internships or jobs at graduation than if you go to a school that is more on the recruiters’ radar (e.g. Stony Brook).
