Which is academically stronger than the other? Which is better in the sciences? Which has better research opportunities? Which is better overall?

There both fairly similar in rankings

Northeastern: 69

Binghamton 86

Does not mean a whole lot, but I guess its something

Binghamton is far cheapter than Northeastern. Both have great programs. What are you looking to do with science? Med school?

Yes. I plan on doing Pre-med… I got a merit scholarship at NEU so it would only cost 10K/yr more than Binghamton, by the way.

Are you in NY? What stats earned you merit at NEU?

oh well thats an easy choice, hands down Binghamton. Health professional schools care about your GPA and MCAT ( or other health standardized score) , the school you went to matters significantly less than , say if you were interested in business. Save that money, go to Binghamton, that will be 40K saved. I personally am going to dental school next year, the school im going to, i have a friend that goes there now that went to NYU undergrad, spent 10 times as much as me on undergrad, and we both ended up at the same school.haha.

Binghamton is also great with pre-health, the science classes are difficult, and well respected.

Chardo, I am from NY. I got 1420/2180 SAT and a 3.8 GPA (UW)… I got a Dean’s merit scholarship and Honors Program at Northeastern.

Bing12, thanks, man. I’m gonna consider what you said when it’s coming down to my final decision. :)

FWIW, I know several doctors who went to Binghamton undergrad. I even know a few who went to Albany, which is considered below Bing. My own cousin is one of them. BTW, he went to SUNY Upstate medical, did residency and fellowship at UVa, and is now a renowned gastroenterologist in Philadelphia. Notice there’s no Harvard or Stanford in that resume. The doctors who refer their complex cases to him don’t seem to care about that.

But I digress. You say NEU would be “only” 10K/yr more than Bing. That would be times 5 (plus inflation), as NEU is a 5 year co-op program. If that’s the case, I can’t see NEU being worth over $50K more than Bing. That fifth year also might be an issue for you. You’re looking at 4 years of med school, plus several years residency, perhaps more years for fellowship. Do you really want to add an extra year to your undergrad?

You can graduate in 4 years at Northeastern and you only pay tuition when you are in classes no when you are on co-op. Beyond that emailing you prospective departments at both schools really goes a long way into getting the pulse on how strong it is. Even just reading the bios of the faculty and what their research studies are. Beyond co ops you can work in a lab or take on an internship during the academic semester. Northeastern is also literally two blocks away from Harvard School of Public and and Harvard Med. They hire many co-ops and interns to work their labs in addition to the labs at NU. If you end up figuring out med school is not for you there are also countless opportunities to do pure research or work for the many pharmaceutical or biotech companies (Boston and San Fran are the epicenters of these companies).

I dont really know too much about Bing, so cannot say anything poor about it, but I think emailing the departments is a great way to find out about the culture at the schools. Other than that I know Stony Brook is supposed to be the hard science/Med SUNY so maybe that would be a good school to look at if you are interested in in-state tuition
