Ok, so I've narrowed it down to these two schools. I'm going in as an undecided and the academics seem similar enough, so I'm going to base my decision on which school I would enjoy more. So basically, what are both schools like? Are the students happy? What is there to do? What about partying, dorms, etc? Any information would be a lot of help for me. Thanks in advance

Come on, anyone?

Well, I’ve figured out that people are really happy at both of them. I don’t know if you’ve visited but Geneseo is really, really rural. Way more than I had expected. The students there don’t seem to mind it, there’s a lot going on around campus- there’s a Late Knight club that seems to be pretty busy. Apparently there’s a lot of partying mostly because there’s not much else to do up there, but they’ve gotten stricter about alcohol lately. The people seem to be intellectually focused and kind of quirky.

Binghamton is more of a traditional college experience, I think… there’s much more going on in the town, nightlife revolves around bars and frats and there’s always stuff going on. The campus is less pretty than Geneseo’s but I personally really liked it. The dorms are like their own communities.

Just got back from both with my son, barring any waitlist surprises he is picking Binghamton. Geneseo physical plant seems rather old and shabby, Binghamton seems to be continuously rebuilding. It seems like Bing benefits from being one of the university centers, SUNY invests more in it. the kids at Geneseo seemed to be heavily from upstate.
He thinks there’s more to do at Binghamton. He likes the housing system there too.

The one caveat is, its quite possible you could get to know profs, at Geneseo better, in upperclass years. There was no way to make an educated comparison about this, since Binghamton’s admissions process didn’t provide any profs we could talk to. We didn’t go to one of the special accepted students days at Binghamton though, maybe there would have been more information there.

We preferred Geneseo over Binghamton and my daughter just loves it there. 46% of the class of 2014 comes from downstate NY (Long Island, NYC, Westchester). From what I understand the school has become much more attractive to downstate students over the years.

Both colleges are great, the biggest difference is Binghamton is a larger university.

I personally believe Binghamton will have relatively brighter students, and if you are undecided, more opportunities due to the larger alumni network.

I do know the Geneseo has a great education program, Binghamton only offers a graduate level education program, Binghamton does not have an undergrad education program. But overall, if you MUST have the small classes for every class, Geneseo would be a better choice.

Binghamton does have larger intro classes, but you get used to it very quickly, and learn to survive and work independently, and mature in that matter faster. Class sizes at binghamton begin to get smaller as you take upper level classes.
