DD was accepted to SUNY Binghamton and URI. She will go in undeclared but leaning towards English. SUNY Binghamton is better academically and less $ but URI has a better location and they gave good merit. She likes URI but we think SUNY would be the better choice. Thoughts?
I guess it depends how much that extra money hurts. I am one of those who has a hard time justifying going OOS for a public, paying that premium, when our own state has good options. Better school and lower cost, I’d pick Bing. But if the money isn’t an issue for you, i’d Let D pick. Good luck!
What is it about the location of URI that is better than Binghamton? I think URI is relatively close to a beach…is this what she is referencing? I have visited both schools and did not find URI’s location to be so much better than Binghamton, so I am curious about what your daughter is thinking.
I assume that you live in NY…many kids don’t want to attend SUNY schools ( I have one who did and was very happy). Is this what your daughter is thinking? On a personal level I would prefer that my child attend Binghamton over URI…Binghamton is much stronger academically. If both schools are affordable then I would discuss the pros and cons and allow her to choose. Did she get into honors/scholars at either school?
if your daughter is looking for a stronger academic school, I’d say Binghamton is the better option. But, before making a final decision you should visit both schools, and assess your pros and cons of each.
Yes she got into honors at URI and likes the proximity to the beach, but she won’t be there in the summer ! URI gave decent merit but it’s still more than SUNY! We are visiting both again. We want her to like where she’s going bu but want the best education for her.
She will have a stronger group…academically speaking…at Binghamton. What is she looking for in an undergraduate education besides being close to a beach? Will the honors program at URI provide opportunities that the non honors program at Bing will not ( different research opportunities, special events etc)?
Exactly I’m not hearing any real compelling reasons for URI!
Me neither, which leads me to believe that she is choosing it in an effort to avoid attending an instate school.
My friend’s son chose URI (from out of state) and was miserable, and transferred after the first year. A very social kid in high school, he found it hard to connect with a group at URI because so many in-staters either attend with friend groups already set from high school, or go home for the weekend. The small size of the state means that nobody lives farther than 1 hour away, which makes it a bit different from other state schools.
I think Binghamton is the academically superior school – there would have to be a compelling reason to make me spend the extra money on URI. The money saved by attending Binghamton can be put towards traveling during a study abroad experience or something like that.
Binghamton is absolutely the academically superior school. To me there is no comparison.
I spent a year one weekend at URI…in January. It was THE dreariest place I’ve ever spent time at in my life. Oh…Nd my then HS junior agreed.
I just can’t imagine what is better about the location of URI than Bing. Sorry…just can’t see it.
And I wouldn’t pay more for URI either.
URI SAT Reading and Writing 480-580, Math 490-590
Suny Bing: Reading and Writing 600-690, Math 630-710

Daughter chose SUNY Binghamton at accepted students day! And we are ALL happy with her choice! Thanks for your input!???
