Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has information on this university and how is it's science program.

They are two different schools…SUNY buffalo and Stony Brook University…Stony Brook’s Science program is very good

Don’t bother with SBU, even though it’s good with Physics. They still haven’t given me my results. I must get my app fee back somehow.

Buffalo gives out some schols (about 5k on an average), but isn’t as good as SBU for science.

If you’re looking at cheap state unis, both UMass Amherst and Rutgers NB cost about the same as SBU, and are way way better.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/india/1332006-where-did-some-you-going-go.html thread has some suggestions.

Stony Brook’s science and engineering programs are very good, especially when you take into consideration the tuition ($7k/year).

A friend graduated from there two years ago. He’s been working with Accenture for two years now ;)

You mean $33k/year, for int’ls.

Oh yes, he was in-state :)

That being said, it is still significantly lower than Cal’s $54k/year, Brown’s $53k/year and Columbia’s $45k/year. So I would say, if you’re looking at schools in that range, then Stony Brook has a good cost to return ratio.

Also, my friend got a 50% scholarship at Buffalo.

Im not an international student, just a US Citizen living here. But I think the COA is same right? Any other colleges that have good Science Programs, and are relatively cheap? 30-40k?

Thanks.!

Harvey Mudd, though expensive, provides reasonable aid, thereby reducing your cost of attendance and also has an amazing science program.

I don’t know about UMass Amherst (Not Amherst) but quite a few of my friends are going there for the sciences, so it could be nice. You should read more about it.

Princeton and Cornell, once you factor in aid have amazing science programs. Along with the added plus of having the “Ivy” tag.

Lol. I don’t have a chance at either Princeton or Cornell. I am looking mainly at

Drexel
Syracuse
Rutgers
Purdue

Virginia Tech
UMass – Amherst
Iowa State

Stony Brook is an excellent school, with top notch programs. Comparing Rutgers, to SBU or Buffalo to SBU, with respect to Sciences, is an insult. The home to the MRI, with buildings devoted to most natural science disciplines, can’t be compared to rag tag institutions. Sure, on a global scale some might be rated overall higher, but SBU gives you an amazing, albiet stressful education at an affordable price. Most students here are incredibly depressed. Our Computer Science, Physics, Bio, Chem, BME programs are not on the same level vis-a-vis Rutgers/SUNY Buffalo.

Put it this way, let me speak about Computer Science:
We are hiring 6 new faculty members , a new 100 million CSE building, and are associated with CEWIT and Brookhaven lab – that’s something Rutgers and Buffalo wish they had. Hell, even Columbia doesn’t want to pick a fight with Stony Brook in Computer Science[which is why we were recently, based on GRC, ranked higher than them on a Ph.D level). We are well on our way to having 60 faculty members, with unparalleled ongoing research.

I dont agree…I know about Rutgers (my cousins went there) and I lived in NJ for quite some time.

While Stony Brook might be a good school, Rutgers (New Brunswick) is an excellent school as well. Especially if you get into Rutgers honors program. The new brunswick/piscataway campus are excellent compared to StonyBrook location. Student life is great, the central NJ location is great, good mix of international students. Nice wide campus, the good thing is there are 4 campuses so it never feels large, Science/Engineering is in Busch campus, which has the CIVET center [Home | Center for Innovative Ventures of Emerging Technologies](http://civet.rutgers.edu/)
[Laboratory for Computer Science Research - Rutgers/url
<a href=“Error Page”>http://www.cs.rutgers.edu/](Laboratory for Computer Science Research)

And because of so many facilities, it is quite easy to find on-campus placement opportunities.

Fall2016parent, you can’t compare CIVET to Brookhaven National lab, perhaps you haven’t done enough research. Stony Brook manages a national lab, and has close relations with Cold Spring Harbors lab. There is a reason why our nuclear Physics program is ranked 4th in the nation, Rutgers is a mile away.

Now comparing a school like Rutgers, that to Stony Brook in a field like Computer Science is truly an insult. Let’s see, we are close to having 50 faculty members,(6 new being hired soon, goal is 60!) a new 100 million CSE building, and like I said earlier, we already have an entire building devoted to CS – along with us running the show in CEWIT with top notch quality faculty. Google does not visit Rutgers to check out their Database course, the way they do at Stony Brook. Yup, a panel from Google to decide who had the best project in an ordinary database couse:

Our results also speak for it’s self, ask any Rutgers CS student and they will tell you how Stony Brook’s ACM gave them a run for their money at the regional ACM contest. heck, even Ivy leagues respect Stony Brook, because we have some of the best algorithm people in the world teaching here. To back up what I said, please have fun looking for Rutgers here;
Caveat: You might find Stony Brook with the top guys;

You want to know something funny? We could’ve been top 3 in the region, had 1 student not mistaken one problem and wrote in it’s proper language.

I really find it interesting when people comment on a school because of it’s overall ranking USNEWS ranking; not even Columbia is as active as Stony Brook when it comes to research in CS, let alone a school like Rutgers – which is a good school, but simply not on the same level as Stony Brook.

Now with respect to Ph.D in CS; good luck finding Rutgers here in the rankings below. Lol @ Rutgers being compared to Stony Brook in Computer Science; Some sources even rank Stony Brook higher than Columbia, and Rutgers barely makes it top 70!

For the future, please think twice before you compare a school like Rutgers, to Stony Brook;

You mentioned "
That being said, it is still significantly lower than Cal’s $54k/year, Brown’s $53k/year and Columbia’s $45k/year. So I would say, if you’re looking at schools in that range, then Stony Brook has a good cost to return ratio. "

But I heard Columbia is much more expensive - around $65k/year. So does $45k/year imply - some scholarships and stuff?
