I got into Suny Buffalo and Umich. I'm interested in studying computer science. I know Umich is more well know, but I'm a NYS resident. Buffalo would be significantly cheaper.

I was wondering, what are the job prospects of someone who comes out of Buffalo with a computer science degree. Is it that much worse than Michigan?

I don’t know what the job prospects are from SUNY, but Michigan pulls recruiters from Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. If you’re liable to be in the top quarter at Michigan, and SUNY does not pull these recruiters, you should definitely consider Michigan. If you’re likely to just be average at Michigan, then it probably doesn’t matter where you go and you are probably best off saving the money.

Thanks a lot Vladenschutte, so from your experience, what type of job prospects do an average UM student face(let’s say 3.2 gpa)? I’m assuming that Umich have the tougher curriculum.

They’ll get a job, with a pretty good (let’s say like in the range of around 70K in Ann Arbor equivalent based on the cost of living where the job is) salary, but nothing that couldn’t be achieved at a lower ranked school most likely.

I think you should for sure, also look in to Stony Brook, which is top 10 in the country for Computer Science programs return on investment, i.e an awesome job with less debt, plus terrific recruiting, and solid faculty/resources.

QCstudent, I see that you go to Stony, could you tell me about the recruiting at Stony? Do companies like Google, and Microsoft recruit on campus at Stony.

I actually didn’t get into Stony. Kind of surprised, since I got into Mich and not Stony. If I got into Stony I would go there for sure. But Buffalo, I’m not too sure about.

@limabrad, You can transfer to Stony Brooks and they would probably accept you. If you keep a high GPA. Also consider the cost of these universities. I like the way that stony brooks is expanding their CS department. It is one of the few universities that understand the importance of STEM majors. I’m tired of universities that give big importance to useless liberal art and business classes

Just so that you know, Stony Brook is not significantly better than Buffalo. They are on the same level overall.

The answer between Buffalo vs UMich depends on your financial students. With my situation, there is no way our family can afford 50k per year for UMich. SO, I would choose Buffalo in a heartbeat.

If your family is well-off, Michigan is the better choice. The price difference of 120k might be worth the education difference, but UMich is definitely better than Buffalo. Recruiters, graduation rate, resources, college town, ranking etc. point towards Michigan.

^Stony Brook is far, far, and I repeat, far better than UBuffalo. Use any metric, research productivity, competition results, alumni, resources, FUNDING, and SBU will rank higher. SBU’s Computer Science department, is the size of UBuffalo entire school of Engineering, SBU is top 30 program as per NRC, Top 10 ROI(in the USA), and look at any source, SBU will be lightyears ahead of UBuffalo, enough said but lets not hijack the thread.

In terms of SUNY BUffalo, I’d go with UMich; since UMich has a solid program with more resources, more faculty, competitive students, etc.

I’m getting 0 aid for both schools. It’s about 20k a year at Buffalo vs 50k at Umich. So over 4 years it’ll add up to 120k. I feel that my first job coming out of Umich won’t be that much better…, but I’m wondering if it’ll matter over the long run. I don’t know what type of jobs Buffalo CS grads get.

Xtremepower, do you currently go to Buffalo?

^Go to Buffalo, 50k per year means that after 4 years, you will have to pay 200k. It is not worth it at all. Go to Buffalo and if you want a stronger program, get good grades and transfer to Stony Brook.

@QCStudent, They are on the same level but stony is better for CS, applied math, engineering and physics but the other programs are not that great like you say they are

Of course, QCstudent is going to say Stony Brook is better. He is an undergrad student at SUNY Stony Brook.

The only place Stony Brook shines is for computer science, for everything else (including engineering) Buffalo and Stony Brook are pretty even.

Stony Brook is a much younger University compared to Buffalo. Stony Brook was established 50-something years ago.

Looks decent enough, but Michigan does seem to have better placement.

A lot of people have been bringing up Stony. Unfortunately, I didn’t get in. I might consider going to Buffalo and then transferring to Stony, I don’t know how tough that’ll be though.

Could anyone tell me about job opportunities for CS grads from Stony? What type of companies recruit there? Do big name firms like Microsoft, Google, etc go there?

Pretty sure the big name big companies recruit widely, because they need to and because they have the recruiting resources to do so.

But Stony Brook is more conveniently located for New York City area companies to recruit at. It also seems to have more of a reputation for CS that attracts some out-of-area companies that do not recruit as widely as the big companies.

Yeah, but it falls on deaf ears on this board. Many folks have it drilled in their minds: Top-10 school + $150K in debt + Job with Google/Facebook/Microsoft is the only path.

Meanwhile…

Last Thursday, we are giving a going away party for this guy who just secured a big-data contracting gig…after passing his Hadoop and Red Hat cert exams. His undergrad CS degree is from West Virginia University.

But hey…College Confidential is also good for the chuckles.

XtremePower, please read before you type. The OP wants to major in Computer Science, and like you said, Stony Brook is far, far more stronger in CS than UBUffalo. In terms of ranking, in terms of resources, in terms of just about anything you can think of; Stony is a top 20 research department, who has a top 10 ROI in the USA, in comparison UBuffalo doesn’t even have a rank. So you claim Stony Brook Shines in Computer Science, and that is exactly what the OP wants.

@Limabrad,
Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Facebook, along with 400 other companies(I just checked ZebraNet and over 400 companies have listings for CSE majors) actively not only recruits on campus, but they also visit our classes to see our projects.

Given our massive scale(Our Computer Science department, has 3 buildings, with a new $100 million building under construction), our department is the size of the entire school of Engineering at UBuffalo. CSE is something we’ve been doing since the 60’s, and we have alumni like the president of Stanford to give you an example of quality. I haven’t ‘boasted’ about any other majors, so I don’t know what Xtremepower was blabbing about.

I suggest you to think about transferring, www.cs.stonybrook.edu , if you wish to stay in New York, however, UMich is a solid program that I also admire; but comparing UMich to UBuffalo, or UBuffalo to Stony Brook is almost an insult.
