Hey guys. So far in high school (I'm only a junior) my gpa overall is probably around a 92-95. I took Honors English my freshman & sophomore year and now I'm taking AP English, IB History of the Americas, and Child Psychology which is a college level course. Do you think Cortland would give me money towards going to their school? Things are really rough financial wise and if they don't give me anything, I can't go. I know about scholarships and whatnot I just want to know what you think about the school itself giving me money.

Are you talking about getting institutional need-based grants from Cortland? I don’t think the SUNYs generally offer those except to EOP students. However, there is a decent chance that you would receive a merit scholarship…have you looked at their website to see what’s available and what the requirements are?

Is your family income low or are finances strained for other reasons? You should probably get an estimated EFC this year using one of the online calculators, such as fafsa4caster, so you’ll have an idea of what other need based programs you might qualify for. You can also estimate your TAP award on the HESC website. If you have a very low EFC, Cortland may award you a pell grant (up to $5550/year), TAP grant (up to $4900), Stafford loans ($5500 max for freshmen), and other aid like work study, SEOG, Perkins loans, and a SUSTA grant. Most low EFC kids can manage to meet the cost of the SUNYs but, as always, scholarships are very helpful for filling in the gaps and replacing loans! I would recommend that you concentrate on keeping your grades as high as possible and prepping throughly for your SATs so you’ll have the best chance for merit aid at Cortland and other schools. Good luck!

Thank you so much!
