SUNY/CUNY cuts

Just reading some financial stuff and ran into this:

October 6 – Bloomberg (Henry Goldman): “Governor David Paterson ordered New York state agencies to cut non-personnel spending by $500 million in the current fiscal year, or about 11%, a day after saying income-tax revenue has declined 36%.. The largest reductions would come in the State University of New York, $90 million; prison system, $69.3 million, and City University of New York, $53 million…”

what i find really upsetting about the SUNY financial situation – last year, faced with budget issues, SUNY acted responsibly in tough economic times by voting a tuition increase – and the state proceeded to pocket 90% of that increase (they’re supposed to keep 80% of it this year, i believe).

this year, the comptroller has recommended increasing out of state tuition since the SUNY’s cost so much less for out of staters than other public colleges – [State report eyes SUNY’s out-of-state tuition rate](http://www.newsday.com/long-island/state-report-eyes-suny-s-out-of-state-tuition-rate-1.1486465) But the problem is that Patterson has already proven that he just sees SUNY tuition as a new form of taxation – raise tuition so the state can pocket the increase.

people need to contact their state legislators NOW before it is too late – SUNY has to be given more control over its tuition - including the ability to KEEP it to fund SUNY!!!

patterson is such a bad governor. The worst of the worst. I would take spitzer back anyday

This wouldn’t be so bad if the SUNYs were living high on the hog, but Pataki had already cut the budget tremendously. The student-teacher ratio is very bad, worse than other state schools. And SUNY Bing, the highest rated in the system, ranks 80 on the U.S. News and World Report ranking. Not so hot.

They had trouble getting OOS students students to attend SUNYs prior to their tuition hike. I don’t think too many OOS students will be running to SUNYs to pay even more tuition now. My son was considering 3 SUNY schools as an OOS student. They are now off his list, but one of the SUNYs that he visited keeps sending plenty of marketing material to our home. That material is just going to end up in the trash now.

even with the tuition hike, sunys are an incredible bargain for OOS – kipplinger named bighamton top pubic value for OOS [Binghamton University - Premier Public: Kiplinger’s](http://www2.binghamton.edu/features/premier/kiplinger.html) – often costing less than a student’s home state’s public school.

i think geographic considerations play into the attractiveness of the sunys – but those OOS who are attracted to the SUNY’s (and the different campuses have different things to offer) have nothing to complain about the tuition – even if there are further increases – SUNY’s just need to be allowed to maintain their quality which means the state not using tuition as form of state tax revenue, rather than SUNY revenue.

Well, I guess it depends upon what you are looking for. I know that prior to their increase my friend pulled her D out of SUNY Bing after a year, because she saved money having her go instate to Rutgers and living in off campus housing (she was instate for Rutgers).

Suny Oneonta costs 23,400 for this year (before further increases). I don’t see the bargain any longer. Sure if you want to compare a SUNY with a $50,000 private school prior to financial or merit aid, it is a bargain. My kid could go to Rutgers for the same price as SUNY Oneonta. I am not saying one is better than the other, but the price is similar. He could go to one of the NC public Us for a similar cost and have better weather. Depending upon EFC and grades, he and others can do better at a small private LAC if one does not require an engineering school, a football stadium, or a research focused university. JMO.

I’m an alumnus of SUNY Binghamton and after visiting it with my D the last few years it just is not the same school, especially with the budget cuts. Student morale is in the sewer. The SUNY system is slipping fast…spend the money and find a tier 1 private school if possible.

One of Spitzer’s goals, which he never got to implement, was to bring the SUNY system up to the level of the UC system. That would have been a wonderful thing. And maybe Andrew Cuomo, when he’s governor, can do that. ;)

his treatment of the sunys is just one example of how out of touch with his constituency patterson is – the demands for the sunys is at an all time high with the state of the economy – a strong suny has a LOT to offfer the state’s economy if you look at the bigger picture.
