I'll be a transfer student, made it 5 semesters at my last school, but money has run out and the financial aid isn't working for me. As a consequence I need to find something a bit cheaper in hopes of finishing my bachelor's. I've got a 3.99 cumulative GPA, 4.00 major GPA at a private school in the south. What schools should I be looking at?

Stony Brook is a truly excellent school in these areas.

I think Buffalo might be worth a look too.

Thanks for your quick reply. How generous is the financial aid at these schools, generally?

Stony Brook would be an excellent choice. A math professor there was just given an award the paper referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics.”

I’m not sure about the financial aid but the tuition is so much lower that it might not make a difference.

I see on their home page that he won the Abel prize, but I’ve often considered the Fields medal to be the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics” (which I hope Ken Ono gets!). That said, math departments and applied math departments are often very different beasts in terms of faculty, funding, classwork, job opportunities, etc.

Also, what are my chances of getting some sort of scholarship as a transfer there? This is a general question, because not knowing much about me you can’t answer, so I guess it’s more about what the chances of a transfer student receiving scholarship money are. I would think schools would less actively be vying with each other for transfers. Maybe a more appropriate question is whether or not they offer merit based scholarship and if so whether transfer students are eligible or likely to receive it.

Thanks for your time.

Look on suny.edu and SB’s own pages for info on scholarships. You could also call the financial aid office.

Good luck.
