I'm considering going to SUNY Fredonia and was wondering if others were too.
And would like to know a bit more about it in general...
So anyone else get into Fredonia/currently attending? (:

Can’t tell you much other than my good friends daughter is a Freshman at Fredonia, as a music education major. She is very, very happy with the school, academics, kids, etc… I think it is lesser known that some of the other SUNY’s (at least for us downstaters) but seems like a great school.

I’m a current student at Fredonia. I’m a music ed. major and my main instrument is piano.

Personally I think this is a great school. I can’t speak for any of the liberal arts classes, because I’m a transfer student and I’m not required to take them (they’re called CC classes here). The music education program is excellent, great teachers, and there’s just a really friendly atmosphere around. Students don’t usually go home for the weekend, so there’s always lots to do. I was worried I wouldn’t meet many people here because I’m sort of shy, but I ended up meeting a lot of people. Its also a pretty decent value for the money if you’re an in-state resident.

I’m from out-of-state, and I visited recently on Accepted Student’s Day and I was slightly unsure of the atmosphere when I visited…
It looked like there wasn’t much to do in town and I was just wondering what do you guys do besides classes? I liked how there was a lot of clubs though!
Also, I don’t think you would know this since you’re in music ed (I’m going for music business), but do you know if the business school’s accredited?
A parent asked that the other day and the answer was a bit sketchy…

Hi fittedhats,

It depends on what you’re into. If you really like clubbing, going out every thursday, this might not be the place for you. People go out drinking and to frats like everywhere else, but this doesn’t really seem like a party school.

For me, my music course work occupies a lot of my time, but theres always activities going on on campus, from concerts to talent shows, stuff like that. The theater program puts on a lot of plays and events, and a lot of the clubs have their own events too. The student association does a pretty good job at keeping things lively around here. Its really small town life here, and in the winter it snows a LOT. But I find that people seem to be much more open and friendly because of the weather.

Yeah, I’m not sure about the program being accredited. I would guess so, but you’d probably have to email a professor about that. I know its a relatively new major though.

thanks so much!
the campus activities sound fine, but I’m not really into small town life so I might have to rethink that…
and I’m from a suburb that gets a lot of snow too, so I’m used to that (:

@fredoniapiano - My daughter is considering Fredonia for it’s theater BFA and also for writing. She would be coming from the desert southwest, and has never lived in snow or anything below 30 degrees and neither have I. I am concerned she is underestimating how bad it might be. Can you give us an idea? Is it really difficult walking to classes during the winter? How about getting to the airport for flights home? Does it make you pretty much dorm-bound all winter, or do you still get out and do things? I want her to be able to have a “typical” college experience, including socially.

BTW…what is your take on the Theater program and productions?

@fredoniapiano
Sorry again, but I have two rather silly questions
Is there any nearby shops the students go to in town?
(ie. mall, superstores, etc)
Or do most of them not go clothes shopping, and find basically everything else in the bookstore?
And what is the transportation like in Fredonia?
Bus? Walking? Just student’s cars?
Thanks again!

@fitted hats

There’s actually a decent sized commercial area in Fredonia just as you get off the I-90 exit… there’s all your typical stuff like a Wal-Mart superstore, TJ Maxx, JC Penney’s, Rite Aid, fast food joints and restaurants, Tops supermarket, ect. I think the closest mall is in Jamestown, but its only like 30 minutes away. I think there’s buses to all these places, so if you don’t have a car you can get there easily enough. I don’t know the exact schedules though because I own a car.

Where else could you meet Rufus T. Firefly?

My oldest DD is a sophomore at Fredonia and loves her life there. To comment on the snowfall, this year was unusually high but only toward the end. Last year they had hardly any snow (being right on the lake they seemed to get passed over but it is cold) and the year before hardly any when we went for her audition. I have heard of only 1 time in two years when anyone had issues making it home and that was after a major snowstorm hit the entire Northeast this past winter. When NJ, PA, VA, and NYC/Tristate area were getting hammered this year Fredonia stayed mainly unscathed.

As others have said there is a lot of retail downtown in Fredonia/Dunkirk. If you cannot find what you need, Buffalo is a short 45 min drive and you can take the bus if you do not have a car. The Walden Galleria is an enormous mall. I was shocked at how much Fredonia has to offer as far as clothing stores. There is a movie theater as well.

I will say this, my DD is always so busy with campus activities and studies/rehearsals that she does not even have time to worry about what to do off campus. They go bowling occasionally, downtown for Fredonia Dixieland gigs, movies, but there is enough going on on campus to keep everyone busy. I have never heard of any student complain of boredom.

As a music business major expect the same situation. Fredonia is known for its program in music business and you will be busy. There will be plenty of clubs and opportunities associated with that major as well. Don’t judge a book by its cover. There is a lot going on in that little town!

I’m going to be a student at Fredonia next year. I went to visit a friend who is currently a Freshman there and I have only heard good things about the college. Everyone there seems to love it. ffrom being there for one weekend, i myself loved it too. I think the best part was the club they have there. I wouldn’t do it as an every weekend thing, but if you’re just going out to dance with your girls for a night, it’s a fun time! Some people call it Scummies (the real name is Sunny’s) because they think it’s gross, but I sure had a good time! It seems like who ever goes to Fredonia ends up loving it in the end and I hope both of us will too!

@fredoniapiano @momof3stars
thanks so much!
i’m still deciding, but it’s reassuring to know the area better (:

I know this is late, but I wanted to let you know my son went to Fredonia. He’s since transferred out, but only because he couldn’t stand being so far from home base and home friends. While he was there, though, it was fine. A great school for liberal arts, and especially for music. As a parent, I LOVED Fredonia - good communications, great website, hospitible, and for a state school, a pretty nice campus. This is especially in comparison to the state school my son is going to now, which is pretty lousy in those areas. If you like city life, you’re out of luck, but the town has all the basic necessities and places to go, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful.

Thanks for all the information. I am looking solely at schools with Music Therapy. SUNY- Fredonia offers MT but unforunately wasnt listed in either Peterson’s or the FISKE guide I was using I’ve checked out their website and I like the size. I’m also from way out west, so I’ve never even heard of the city, much less the school. It’s been hard trying to get a feel for it. Does anyone know anything about their music therapy program? or any information that could help someone with no concept of the school? Thank you
