SUNY Fredonia vs. Potsdam (Crane) for Music Composition

Looking for feedback regarding either of these programs or a comparison of the two from anyone who might have first hand knowledge.

Purchase and Buffalo are possibilities too, for composition. Sorry I cannot say more about the two schools you asked about  I have heard about Crane but not Fredonia, but others will know more in detail.

My daughter had a great experience at Interlochen Arts Camp this past summer where Rob Deemer (Fredonia) was her primary comp teacher. He is an active composer and often brings in great composers for short residencies to interact with the students. Sorry I can’t speak directly to Crane. Best of luck!

My daughter has been accepted to both programs for next fall. I haven’t had as much interaction with the professors at Crane as my daughter has so I can’t say as much about them but we have been nothing but impressed with Dr. Deemer at Fredonia. He’s met with our daughter, had a lesson with her, gave us a personal tour of the music school and runs a stellar program from everything we’ve learned. Crane has a great reputation but l didn’t get to interact with them.

Dembrooks, will your daughter be attending Fredonia this fall?

Yep, she decided last week that she will be attending Fredonia! We’re thrilled with her decision and so excited for her to work with Dr. Deemer.

Congratulations! My daughter has also been accepted to both programs and is leaning towards Fredonia (waiting on one other school) We may wind up together as Fredonia “Comp Moms”!

Awesome! We’ll have to “introduce” our daughters if that’s the case.

Committed to Fredonia, Class of 2020! Looking forward to meeting you, Dembrooks!

Just saw this, we are too. We’ll have to get out kids connected.
