SUNY Fredonia

Does anyone know if there's some sort of audition alternative to going to their campus?
I missed the Long Island date... and both of my parents work on Saturdays (which is the only day that the rest of the auditions are held on).

Not any more as far as the website is concerned. The Albany and LI dates are gone, everything else happens at Fredonia.

call the school maybe they will make arrangements for you.

Riku, imho, you are wasting your time asking the school to make special arrangements for you. SUNY Fredonia has a large music department and to co-ordinate everything needed for an audition season is no small task. They set audition dates months in advance, even going to the trouble of holding a session on LI, and in Albany. There are 4 more dates open, all throughout February and one late in March. Despite busy schedules on the part of both students and families, time is always found to attend an auditions and it’s unreasonable to expect a school to make alternate arrangements for one student. They are going to tell you that since there are open dates, you need to get yourself upstate for one of them! The March date gives you almost two months lead time and should be plenty of time for at least one of your parents to request the day off, or to make travel arrangements for you. Part of making the transition to college is about being able to do things on your own, and although you may think it harsh, this is the time to begin. Even if all of the dates had passed, I don’t believe they would be open to alternate arrangements because those they provided were more than adequate and they will expect you to have made arrangements by point in time. Again, I’m not meaning to give you a hard time, but to be honest and upfront. Make the best use of the remaining time and talk to your parents about doing what needs to be done now. I wish you the best of luck.

Mezzo’sMama is most likely correct — but I would call anyway! Due to conflicts (with auditions, state choir, etc.), we were having difficulty with scheduling auditions. On the basis of phone calls, a smaller program agreed to arrange a separate time for my son. In another case, our phone call revealed that one of the big, prestigious programs had added another (unadvertised) date that now worked. So call …

It never hurts to ask.

The realities of a state school in a time of economic crunch may not be to your benefit, so don’t expect anything, but try and work through the bureaucracy and the clerks to get to an actual admissions person. Perhaps something can be done, or possibly they will accept a recording as an audition alternative.

A smaller, private program tends to be more flexible, but even then it is a crapshoot.

While Mezzo’sMama’s advice may sound a bit harsh, think of it as a wake-up call. Not planning, thinking ahead, missing deadlines will not bode well if it’s a pattern that continues as an undergrad.

I will say that sometimes life does get in the way. Parents may not be able to get the time off. Not everyone works a 9 to 5er Monday thru Friday. Jobs are tenuous, some are employed in service jobs, health care, emergency services where weekends and holidays may well be a normal scheduled work day. Switching shifts is not always possible.

Try and work something out. If you can get transport from a peer or classmate auditioning, try that means. If it means public transport, see what can be done. Maybe another family member (uncle, aunt, grandparent can help). Use your network.

Review the rest of your audition season now (with your parents) and make sure ALL aspects are covered. It is hectic enough and there are enough obstacles in the way without creating your own.

Best of luck.

The thing is I didn’t know I was going to audition at Fredonia until a few days ago.
I never considered it until my friend went there to audition and raved about it.
It’s not like I’ve know I wanted to audition there since September and was just plain lazy and didn’t schedule an audition, you know?

And like violadad said, my mom works for the county and my dad owns his own business, so taking off on a Saturday is really not possible at all, especially since Saturady is my mom’s overtime day and my dad’s bill-and-catch-up day. =</p>

Well the director of admissions at the SoM got back to me and said that it may very well be possible that they will arrange a date for me to go up there during the week to audition ! :)

Good on you! Hope it works out!

Same from me.

Good luck to you! I certainly didn’t want to be rough on you, but most schools won’t make exceptions. You handled things well and I really hope that they can arrange things so that you can be heard. What I didn’t want to happen was to have kids think that they could just up and decide to present a school with a new set of “reasons why not” and expect things to be rearranged for them. I know that’s not what you intended, but if one person does something, someone else sees that and takes it a step further and so on. In your case, it looks like things worked out in your favor- let us know how it goes!
