I was accepted to both, but they were my safeties. I didn't plan on attending either one, but I am out of choices... I was denied by Wesleyan, Vassar, and Brandeis. I was waitlisted by Oberlin and Colby.

I'm asian. I'm very much alternative in my taste in music... I'm a big independent/artsy film buff. I am a idealist... I would describe myself as a counterculture intellectual. I can be a bit antisocial, but I get along with people who are different and proud of it. I'm also very quirky, and my sense of humor reflects that.

I'm pretty much against the frat/party scene. I am looking for a social life though... looking for activities outside of parties... good films and concerts, etc. I'm also looking to meet people who are like me, because there certainly aren't any in high school and it's making me depressed.

I know both Geneseo and Binghamton isn't really populated with people like me, but I'm hoping that one of them is better than the other. Which is it? Thanks to those who respond.

BINGHAMTON IS THE BEST SUNY PERIOD. Geneseo is lesser and it isn't even a university center like Binghamton is. Binghamton is considered a public ivy. I love Binghamton and would have gone if not accepted by Cornell. I believe on U.S. News it is the number 5 best public college and it is Kiplingers number 1 value college. A Binghamton education is WELL respected. YOu can't go wrong!

If you thought that Wesleyan, Vassar, Oberlin, and Colby would have been just right for you, Geneseo fits into that list and (IMHO) Binghamton does not.

Yeah, I was also guessing Geneseo. But I have a couple of follow up questions... are there people like me at Geneseo? Does anybody know if there is anything to do there... outside of partying?

Geneseo is about 40 minutes from Rochester - but it's closer than that to shopping and lots of restaurants - maybe 20 minutes to a suburb called Henrietta. I suspect a lot of kids have cars and the Geneseo bus goes to the mall there too. They also offer transportation to various Rochester stops on the weekends. (Be sure to hit the Public Market - it is fabulous and one of the area college students' favorite haunts.)

If you are an artsy-movie fan, be sure to try to get to the Little Theater as often as possible (it looks like the Geneseo bus goes there, but it's a bit of a distance, about 40 minutes maybe, it's in downtown Rochester). That's our artsy movie theater and it has a nice coffee shop too - it's right around the corner from the Eastman School of Music where you can catch a lot of free/cheap wonderful performances.

In a nutshell, Geneseo itself is pretty much out in the cornfields, but if you get creative (and especially if you have friends with cars) you can find plenty to do.

You mentioned music- I don't know if you actually play, or just listen. But you should knwo that Geneseo has a small but excellent music depatment, and they welcome the participation of players in a lot of their productions, not just music majors. The campus is beautiful (although you'll get a lot of exercise going up and down hill from dorms to classroom buildings) and the downtown area, although only a few blocks long, is right there at your doorstep. It also seems like a very friendly place, and really it's not so small (5000-6000 students) that you couldn't find some like-minded friends. I've never been to Binghamton, but I have heard a lot of rumors that it isn't very friendly.
All-in-all, if I were in your place I'd take Geneseo.

After just having completed a visit to both Geneseo and Binghamton; I would have to say, stick with Geneseo. The town is small but there seems a lot to do on campus. Binghamton is not as nice. However, if you are really an artsy type, New Paltz would have been a better choice. That campus has a more urban feel and seems to attract more "artsy" types. Ithaca College is also quite nice, we were really quite impressed. There seems to be a wide variety of kids there will all kinds of interests that reflect part of how you describe yourself. It looks like a very active campus.

I'm glad to know that there are things to do on campus in Geneseo... I was kind of worried about that. I heard diversity is lacking at Geneseo though... is it getting better?

My cousin goes to Binghamton, and she always complains about how there is nothing to do there. It also seems like many are starting to consider Geneseo as the best NY state school over Binghamton.
