SUNY Makes a Strong Showing in the 2009-2010 Kiplinger Best Public Values

Despite continued cuts in funding to the SUNY schools several colleges made it to the list:

And There was Much Rejoicing … yaay

It will be interesting to see how hard SUNY is going to be hit with the NYS budget crisis.

As a NYS resident and taxpayer, I hate to say this for the OOS’rs but it seems we should raise OOS tuition if we are such a bargain.

DEFINITELY should raise OOS tuition. all the NY kids who go OOS have to cough up a lot of dough, but everyone coming into our schools pays only a fraction of that.

OOS tuition is cheap because we need young people to come to NY and stay here. An essay from the Rockefeller Institute explains the situation: [Out-of-state students at SUNY: A problem, or a solution?](http://www.rockinst.org/observations/shafferd/2009-10-out-of-state_students_at_SUNY.aspx)

I understand the argument. All I am saying is that I don’t necessarily think it is good that we have our two most competitive schools (Bing and Geneseo) as numbers 1 and 2 in best bargain for OOS. It seems that we could raise the OOS tuition some (not making it the highest, but not the best bargain!) and still attract OOS people. BTW, how do we know the OOS’rs are staying upstate? My guess is that they sure as heck aren’t staying in Geneseo. And I live in Binghamton. There are no jobs here for them to stay and fill!

While we do want to attract out-of-state students the funding stream to the SUNY campuses continues to be cut. Several if not all of the SUNY campuses want the freedom to set the level of tuition by campus and to RETAIN the tuition revenues. Currently, the Governor in NY can take away every new tuition dollar each campus receives without consulting the Legislature.

This makes absolutely no sense!

From what I understand SUNY will be launching a Major Online Advocacy campaign this Spring to change this. As soon as I know more I will post it here.

agreed Geneseo. I went to SUNY schools undergrad and grad, as did my DH. It is horrible that they increase tuition and then divert it away from SUNY into the general fund. Please keep us posted.

as an OOS Bing alumni (was instate as astudent), it’s ridiculous to raise tuition on either side (IS or OOS) if the increase is not going to go towards the educational process; by diverting any tuition into the general fund is basically telling the students that “NYS doesn’t care about the education of their students”…

OOS tuition should be raised, there is no question about that…but if NYS is going to use the increase for purposes other than the SUNYs, then basically the OOS student is paying for state services they are not even using…

OOS tuition should be used to subsidize in-state students…not the state as a whole…period; end.

I agree. One can bicker all he wants about OOS tuition issues and the SUNY budget crisis, but one thing we can all agree on is that to use the SUNY schools as a fundraiser for the state’s general fund is absolutely ludicrous.

Its not fair to the entire college body.

i would strongly urge everyone who shares the opinion that the state should not keep stealing the SUNY tuition increases to express that opinion to their state legislators.

postings on a site like this are great for getting the message across to people as to what is actually going on (ie, tuition increases do little if anything to help SUNY if the state just takes the money to balance its budget – and really just amount to a tax on SUNY students for the benefit of other state programs) – but ultimately people need to communicate how they feel to their legislators if they want anything to happen. (i might normally add to contact the governor, but i think paterson is a lost cause.)
