Ok so my D received her financial aid package in the mail today and it meets her need 100% with one $3500 loan which I am going to cancel which would mean D debt upon graduation will be $0...however, D was also accepted to Syracuse University and she is very excited about it but she would be facing a $14,000 debt upon graduation...I dont think New Paltz is on the same level as Syracuse in terms of reputation (please feel free to correct me if this is wrong)...kinda stuck as to what advice I should offer her, should the decision come down to only dollars and cents? Any thoughts?

i would take the $14,000 debt in a heartbeat. more people know of syracuse outside the NY-area and 14k is pennies compared to what a lot of people come out of school with. if it were 14k a year, then that would be different, but if it really is 14k total after 4 years, then definitely go for it. that’s awesome finaid at a private.

Syracuse for sure.

Syracuse. 14k of debt is nothing for 4 years.

Congrats on the great offers! I would have a conversation with an FA officer at Syracuse and ask detailed questions to determine if her FA for future years is likely to remain the same. Also, don’t forget about annual increases! If it still looks affordable, I would choose Syracuse. Fwiw, as an alum, I can verify that it is a great school and does have name recognition nationwide.

Wow - thank you guys so much for your comments! When I spoke to other people they had the same response as well, that we should go with Syracuse hands down…so thanks again everyone. Good luck to all of you and your children…

Gosh, 14K is nothing. Syracuse for sure!!!
