SUNY New Paltz for math or computer science --non traditional student

Hi
My daughter is an eclectic kind of kid. She is very artsy and is considering going into animation, but is also very good in math. She is thinking of majoring in applied math somewhere since it is more marketable but I don’t think she’d feel comfortable at a traditional engineering/math program. I see her in a program that has flexibility and is more interdisciplinary. Although she doesn’t have a lot of computer science experience, she will be taking AP computer science next year as a senior and I am thinking that that might appeal to her as well. I am trying to find programs in math or computer science that might have some social science applications (another interest of hers) or art applications. We will be looking at private schools as well, but since money is an issue, I’d like her to apply to some SUNYs. Trouble is, where would she fit in? We live on Long Island and she would like to stay within a 4-5 hour radius. We visted Stony Brook and she really did not like it. I think New Paltz would have the student vibe she would like, but how are those departments? She is an excellent student with a 95 average and close to 2100 on SATS (she is retaking them).
I’m also thinking that an honors program might be good for her.
Any input would be appreciated.

Every parent who describes their kid as eclectic and artsy tends to see them do well at NP! That’s where my brother is and he’s definitely thrilled to be there. It’s a great vibe and it seems like she’d definitely fit in re: her personality and what she’s looking for. My impression is that New Paltz isn’t necessarily known nationwide for STEM, but if she’s looking to stay in the NY area, I think the school has a strong reputation that will do her well. I recommend visiting and talking to professors if possible.

thanks!
We will definitely be visiting
