My D has been accepted to both schools and is trying to make a decision. She is still undecided on a major but is leaning towards communications/film editing. Both schools seem to be up and coming and are increasingly more selective.

Please share your opinions and experience with these schools. If you or your children attend or have attend either of these schools, what has been your experience, likes, dislikes?

My daughter is also a Freshman at Oneonta, she absolutely loves it. I cant think of one thing about it she doesnt like. She also thought NP was too artsy and didnt like that the male to female ratio at NP was something like 35/65.

Now that you have the college list narrowed down to 2, it’s time to go back for a second visit ASAP—both schools back-to-back. Make a point to check out the communications facility at both schools.

New Paltz takes a more liberal arts approach with their communications program and works on prepping kids for graduate studies in Communications. Oneonta takes a more traditional approach to their Communications–Mass Media program. They make a point to teach the technical end of communications. If she’s interested in TV/Film, I would recommend the school that has the better equipment, studios, and technical training. Research the Communications major info on the Oneonta and the New Paltz websites.

Go back and visit the schools now. Usually, the second visit is more productive and the student gets a better feel for the campus. Make a point to talk with someone in the Communications dept. Check out the Communications building. Also, consider the surrounding area. See if there are places within walking distance to the campus–places to eat, bars, movie theater, etc. Make sure to consider transportation to and from the campus during the college breaks.

Oneonta! I got accepted to both schools also and if I werent going to my first choice college next year, I would be going to Oneonta, my second choice!

I’m not sure why but I just don’t get a good vibe from New Paltz. I used to want to go there, though.

If it is a very tough decision, visit both. D should try an overnight visit at both if possible. Probably one will surface as preferable. If not, pick the one that is better for your family financially. And if all of that fails, take out and use a dart board!

D is a JR at NP and absolutely loves it. Niece is a JR at Oneonta, and is happy there. I think academically NP is probably more challenging, and as far as a college town NP wins hands down. There is alot more to do in NP than in Oneonta. My niece has compained about lack of anything to do if you aren’t into the drinking scene at Oneonta. Don’t know about the commuication program. But I don’t think you can go wrong with either. A second visit will be very helpful, NY smile had some great observations. Best of luck!
