Kayf, my daughter is a junior this year, so she didn't apply yet. We've just been touring. She's decided for next year to apply to Binghamton and New Paltz. She's a full-IB diploma candidate with a 3.7-ish and rising UW GPA, high SAT and ACT scores and interesting/unique ECs. She doesn't expect to get into Binghamton.

Zooser, I think it is wise of you to suggest at least one school other than Binghamton, SB or Buffalo. I am hoping economy is better next year, for a lot of reasons, and less of a crunch on state schools.

My daughter hated Stonybrook with a raging passion and would never consider going to Buffalo, so our options are somewhat crunched. New Paltz seemed like the best alternative.

Thought I would update this thread with the final outcomes and decisions, as one never knows who it’ll help in the future. The young man applied to seven schools: 3 SUNY (Binghamton, Buffalo and Plattsburgh) and four private colleges. Results: Accepted everywhere except Binghamton, where he was deferred and then rejected. He’ll attend one of the small private colleges that gave him excellent merit money.

Moral of the story is: Guidance counselors, like the rest of us, aren’t infallible. This student was told he would NEVER be accepted to Buffalo.

HeliMom, did his SAT scores go up from the originally reported 1500/2400?

Though it was 3 years ago, my kids most unexpected acceptance was also Univ. of Buffalo. Her GC also felt Buffalo was a long shot as she had similar stats to OP- I believe she applied as an Exercise Science major (closest to her sport management interest). So it’s possible for those kids applying to majors that are a bit off the beaten path, the applicant may a better chance at admission as there may be less kids applying to major in that particular subject area and less competition.

I also agree- don’t take the GC’s word as gospel because there are just too many variables with admission.
