SUNY Oneonta

Is anyone still waiting to hear from Oneonta? DS applied in December and has heard from all schools (3 of them SUNY's) except for Oneonta. I am starting to think they never received his application.!

D applied with the SUNY app in mid-November and was accepted the first week of February. You should be hearing any day now if you applied a month later. Otherwise just call admissions. We had to call my daughter’s top choice SUNY because we didn’t receive a confirmation email from them within the two weeks they said we would. They re-sent the confirmation the same day. Good Luck

My son applied mid-November as Early Action (non-binding), and his acceptance letter was dated 11/30/12. We were just down there again for our second visit on Friday (3/1/13) for the Scholarship Brunch. I was pretty impressed by their presentations / question and answer sessions. He is down to his top two choices, Ithaca College and SUNY Oneonta.

JEDad2013^ I’ve seen some of your other posts and your one son seems to be looking to go to school in Central NY/Mohawk area. He had very good stats and Oneonta is one of his top choices - can I ask why? What was it that he liked about SUNY O so much? My D applied more or less just to shut me up. She was accpepted but didn’t get a scholarship and now doesn’t even want to visit.

@YankeeDad - We do live in Central NY, and given the number of very good colleges in NYS, both boys were content to stay in NY. The one son who has SUNY Oneonta on his list (Ithaca College is his other top choice), is interested in Computer Science and Music Technology. Ithaca College has an interesting major called Emerging Media (some colleges call it New Media), and it would allow him to blend both of those interests and stay on the technical edge of technologies like iOS, Android, Social Networking as well as a minor in Audio Production. In searching out other colleges in NY that might cover both of his interests, we ran across Oneonta, who has a Computer Science program and they have an Audio Production Minor that’s very good. Because of their Music Industry major, they have excellent facilities for that.

I was concerned about the quality of their programs and level of their overall student body. I had e-mailed one the Computer Science professors before our first visit in the fall. We actually met with him when we went down. They actually have a pretty strong program, although it is fairly small. Then I found out that one of my co-workers previously worked with another one of their professors at IBM. So, I e-mailed him as well. It confirmed that they have a good program, and that they are getting quite selective with admissions. I talked with a few different students (who weren’t associated with the visit program) when I was there at our last visit, and they seemed to be a pretty intelligent bunch and really liked the school. Both of our boys were looking at small to mid-size schools. They don’t care for the very large schools. Oneonta has a very nice campus. Freshman dorms have all been renovated. They are working their way through the other ones. The computer science professors both said that after the initial computer science classes, most classes have a little more than 10 people, so very nice student to faculty numbers. It felt like a good environment to my son, although I think Ithaca would be his top choice if the financials work out. He did receive a Presidential Diversity Scholarship from Oneonta, so his Tuition is covered, but we already received their financial package, and we would have to cover the rest, but it’s not too bad considering other college costs.

So to finish this rambling reply, I would say it would depend on your Daughter’s choice of major and the size of the school she is looking for, but I think it’s a quality school at a good price. They were actually ranked #3 by Kiplinger’s for having lowest debt at Graduation. http://aristotle.oneonta.edu/wordpress/news/2013/01/02/college-named-to-list-of-100-best-values/</a> Depending on where you live, I would say it’s at least worth a look. What other college’s is your Daughter looking at? The best of luck to you.

You might also might want to read through some of these reviews or have your daughter read through them: <a href=“SUNY Oneonta - Oneonta, NY | Cappex”>SUNY Oneonta - Oneonta, NY | Cappex;

@JEDad2013, Thanks for the reply. We’re familiar with many of Oneonta’s good points and it’s rankings which were good only seem to be getting better. We’re in the Hudson Valley and my daughter is looking to go to a Business School. She’s aware SUNY O is accredited but is having a hard time believing their internships can possibly be as strong as a school located in either NYC or Boston. She has the same concerns for Binghamton. She has agreed to visit Oneonta in the next few weeks and at least take a look. We’ll know better in a few weeks after we recieve the last of her decision results but I’m thinking Oneonta will be a no. Thanks again.

Oneonta seems to be a great school with good value for in-state students (SUNY tuition is also less expensive for out-of-state students than most other public schools). Oneonta is actually quite competitive, with approx 40% acceptance rate, so applicants must have a strong high school performance record. I visited the campus with son and was very impressed with how beautiful and clean it looked. Also has a safe feel and a good record for safety. Was surprised to learn what a large Music Industry program they had, which my son wants to do. It is also very close to a nice town with things to do. Overall, we are excited with his decision!

@Golub61 - My son ultimately decided that he is attending Ithaca College. He received very good scholarships at both schools, although Oneonta would have been a little less expensive, but not a huge difference. The Ithaca Computer Science program seemed a little more cutting-edge (he is majoring in Emerging Media), but if your son wants to go into Music Industry, that is certainly one of Oneonta’s strengths. They have excellent resources for that program. I also agree it was a great campus with bright students. If my son didn’t select Ithaca, then Oneonta was definitely his second pick. I think if you are in-state, and wants to go for Music Industry, I think you will both be very happy. Best of Luck!
