Hi all,
I'm a parent who's trying to help out a really smart girl who's grades don't reflect it and has had a tough life. I became associated with her through my work with her family and am trying to help her family see that she may be able to go to college and I think the EOP program would be perfect for her. Her family income is very low, and she meets the EOP guidelines in that respect.

The problem is grades. She has about a 2.1-2.6 unweighted gpa-- I am not sure but her parents are going to give her Guidance Counselor permission to speak with me and to look over her stats. She is taking the SAT in January, and boy was that like pulling teeth to get the family to sign her up for that, even though she received a fee waiver!

She's had a tough 5, yes 5 years of high school. Her parents moved her around a lot and at one point didn't even enroll her in school until the year was half over and in a show of the intelligence I see in her she entered Geometry in 10th grade having missed the first two quarters and ended up passing the class and the Regents exam!

I know the logical thing would be for her to start at a community college, but she lives within 20 minutes of SUNY Oswego and has friends that attend. I really think if she got away from home and into an environment with her few friends that value education, even if its only living 20 minutes from home, I think she would thrive. You would not believe the hours she has had to work during HS to support herself ( her parents really did not support her at all-- she lived near a convenience store and thats where she bought herself meals as she was constantly left home alone in an empty house with not much to eat.) Because of this she is also street smart and wise beyond her years. SUNY Oswego's website has only vague information on EOP and I and she will call them, but does she realistically have any chance of getting in?
