SUNY Purchase BFA Acting

Thank you! Mine still says the same thing about my audition time!

I received an email a few days ago saying I was in the “alternate pool” for BFA Acting which I’m guessing is the waitlist. Does anyone know how many people are generally on the waitlist?

mypurchase has not changed for me
hmm.

I got my phone call yesterday, with that being said they recently just got my scores, so that’s why it took a bit longer. I’m super excited and all, but I auditioned for them at the unifieds along with several other schools. I didnt get to see their campus nor will I be able to before I make a decision. I was also accepted into Minnesota, and Ithaca! Now that I can’t see none of the schools I will base my decision on solely the training. I want to LEARN and get pushed to my limit, does suny’s training beat out minnesota’s/ Ithaca’s? I don’t mind living in a crappy dorm so long as I get a rigorous training.

Tough to choose between all those great schools, Ian. Purchase was one of the top picks for us, but I will say that I had a lot to do with that because of the price tag! To be in the same group of worthy BFAs (like UMinn and Ithaca) and to cost much less, it was a factor for our family.

It was my understanding that Purchase has one of the top 5 programs in the country. Also, that the campus is not attractive.

Money, will help with my decision. Would you say that all three universities are on the same, training level? How does their cut program work?

Are you a NY resident?

Hard to say. They are all extremely well regarded. If you’re from NY State, Purchase is a STEAL.

Ithaca and Emerson will offer you more performance opportunities in department-wide productions after your first semester while Purchase does productions with each grade starting in the 3rd year.

We were told purchase productions begin 2nd year

I believe that public performance doesn’t begin until the 3rd year, but I could be mistaken.

I also got a call…i got it on the 15th…and ill definitely be there…I see a lot of other acceptances and I cant wait to join you all and be in the same acting company at purchase!..im actually a theater and performance student there currently and im transferring to the acting program…so if u have any questions…i GOTCHYA!

That says a lot about the program, bchaundre, if you have already spent a year at Purchase and now want to move over to the acting program. Congrats!!

Yes, a big congratulations, bchaundre! Do you have any idea how common it is for students to do what you have done?

It would be very interesting to know more details of your story.

Well, Purchase is on our radar now, but for grad school, and costume design. Daughter’s professors have connections with Purchase and she met one at the USITT conference this weekend and I have to say I am really really impressed with their master’s degree design program. When she told me about it I recalled that I had heard really good things about Purchase somewhere - rereading this thread now I recall it was here. Anyone have any thoughts on this angle? We’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that an MFA is going to be in her future but as she’s a sophomore, we still have a ways out before she’ll be making any decisions - but now is the time to start looking at them, I think!

~I do miss the camaraderie of the performing arts parents in this forum, a lot!!!

Nice to see you posting, snapdragonfly!

I’ve missed you all. We finally found a new house this fall and after living in our first home for 15 years - longer than I’ve ever lived ANYWHERE - we moved into our new (to us) and what we think will be our final home - but we closed just a couple weeks before Christmas. And I, happen to be working full time now, retail, (gotta pay that St Ed’s private school tuition!!!) so really the months of November, December and then January (when we do inventory) have been borderline TRAUMATIC for me. I’m not one to enjoy moving around, I hate packing, and after 15 years…so much STUFF…being an artist and a packrat and all the costuming stuff that heck no I’m not getting rid off…and this house is our dream home but needs updating from head to toe. Which will take the rest of my life, I suppose.

But anyway. Kelsey has always been torn between costumes and performance as I have too…but very few schools let you do both at the same time and the few we found didn’t work out for other reasons. So we kind of miss the future that isn’t going to be, in performance…but costume is pretty darn exciting too. So it’s going to be good, I think. The only grad program I know about is Carnegie Mellon, it’s the only one anyone outside the theater community even has the vaguest notion about, but I’m sure there must be some awesome grad programs out there other than CM; Purchase sounds fab. Sure wish we could get in state tuition! I don’t suppose they offer any kind of back door thing like they do at Texas State? (all kids who qualify for a theater scholarship get an OOS waiver…and they all seem to get a scholarship! lol!) or Oklahoma (which says they don’t give OOS rates but actually if you have certain numbers, they do.)

Thankyou guys so much! So from what i know of, the current freshman company has one internal transfer like me and the current sophomore company has none. i dont know about the junior and seniors companies. But from what ive been told, they try to limit themselves to at tops 2 internal transfers. umm, my story isnt really that interesting haha, i just went to the administrator for the program she gave me my internal transfer papers for the program then i signed up for an audition date like anyone else. I like it because they really do make decisions based on how well your audition went and the amount of potential that they see in you. Doesnt really matter if you are an internal transfer or not.

Everybody’s story is interesting, bchaundre! I was curious what led you to choose Purchase’s Theatre and Performance major in the first place.

Bump. I got waitlisted! Has anybody else on the waitlist heard?
