SUNY Purchase for Composition?

Hi,

I was recently accepted into SUNY Purchase for composition, and I was wondering how good its reputation is in that field, how good the teachers are, etc. I hear that it's fairly reputable, yet not a single one of my music teachers have heard of it, so I've been a little skeptical. Also, does anybody know how big the composition department is, in terms of students (how many are admitted each year, etc.)?

Thanks!

Congrats on your acceptance. The faculty has very solid credentials. Several Oberlin BMs with excellent graduate schools. I do not know size etc. Contact the composition faculty and try and visit. As an accepted student, you should be able to have a significant discussion with the faculty and have all your questions answered. If you plan to go to grad school, make sure to ask where the comp. grads go and whether they get fellowships and scholarships at the schools they choose.

I’m sure you have seen this, but for others: [Purchase College - Academic Programs - Arts - Music - Composition - Home](<a href=“Search results for • Purchase College”>Search results for • Purchase College)

Purchase has a great reputation and has some advantages: proximity to NYC, presence of other artists for interdisciplinary work, and, unusual for conservatories, affordability.

Check out the music of the faculty and students, the courses, and Purchase’s offerings in several genres, including classical, jazz, film, electronic. Visit. See what you think!

An outstanding composer and teacher we know well in the Boston area went to Purchase, then got his PhD at Brandeis. Great way to do undergrad, grow as a composer, and have some money left for grad school or a starving artist phase!

Good luck!
p.s. known as SUNY Purchase, Purchase College, conservatory of music…maybe the folks who haven’t heard of one name will know another…I mean, it’s pretty darn well-known for many different arts…a big name in dance for instance
